Yes of course he had to hide his racism. The 60s were over and the 70s ushered in a hatred of racists. Byrd apologized only to remain in office. A guy who said the following would never be sorry: The below hate comes from the heart:

Byrd was a champion of civil rights and liberties

For the 2003–2004 session, the*National Association for the Advancement of Colored People*(NAACP)[85]*rated Byrd's voting record as being 100% in line with the NAACP's position on the thirty-three Senate bills they evaluated. Sixteen other senators received that rating. In June 2005, Byrd proposed an additional $10,000,000 in federal funding for the*Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorialin Washington, D.C., remarking that, "With the passage of time, we have come to learn that his*Dream*was the*American Dream, and few ever expressed it more eloquently."[86]*Upon news of his death, the NAACP released a statement praising Byrd, saying that he "became a champion for civil rights and liberties" and "came to consistently support the NAACP civil rights agenda".[87]

Robert Byrd evolved; he changed for the good. He apologized for his intolerant past and declared that he had been wrong.

Byrd displayed a mix of conservative and liberal points of view in his later years. Remarkably, though, he came out on the right side of issues that are of concern to black voters.

Byrd enjoyed a perfect 100 percent rating from the NAACP. And he proposed $10 million to fund a Martin Luther King National Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Yes we know...Byrd had to alter his public image in order to stay in office. In his heart though...a man who thinks of blacks as mongrels doesnt change his ways. Imagine if Donald Trump said that and then said I sorry. What would you say? Careful...this is where we see if you are a liar.

If Trump publicly repented, as Byrd did, and then walked the walk of anti-discrimination I would reconsider my opinion of him.

Byrd’s clearly inelegant choice of words did not detract from the point he was attempting to make.

Frankly, I was more disappointed in Byrd’s belief that racial disparity was largely eliminated and that people were exaggerating current (at that time) racial bias.
