Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III has raised the likelihood with President Trump’s legal team that his office will seek an interview with the president, triggering a discussion among his attorneys about how to avoid a sit-down encounter or set limits on such a session, according to two people familiar with the talks.

Mueller brought up the issue of interviewing Trump during a late December meeting with the president’s lawyers, John Dowd and Jay Sekulow. Mueller deputy James Quarles, who oversees the White House portion of the special counsel investigation, also attended.

It will be interesting to see how this develops. Trump gets very funny when he is forced to be off-script.
 
It must be a face to face sit down encounter with several hours at least set aside for it. Otherwise it becomes merely an exercise for th Trump legal team in writing responses that do not get Trump in trouble and is not a true reflection as to how he would answer questions asked to him without the attorneys preparing answers. Trump reveals himself when he speaks ad lib off the cuff from the heart.
 

That will be very interesting if it happens.

I wonder how many times he will say "I can't remember", in spite of having one of the greatest memories of all time.

Watergate lawyer drafted in for Trump-Russia investigation, special counsel Robert Muller reveals

Robert Mueller isn’t starting his work investigating Russia’s influence on the 2016 election alone, he’s also bringing along a veteran Watergate prosecutor and another man who he’s worked closely with him before.

James Quarles, who started his career working on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and Aaron Zebley, Mr Mueller’s chief of staff at the FBI, are joining the investigation.

Another Watergate veteran says that Mr Quarles’ prior experience in such a high-stakes investigation will only help stabilise the process.

Special prosecutor 'will take Donald Trump from frying pan to fire'

“There is nothing comparable to the kind of pressure and obligation that this kind of job puts on your shoulders,” Richard Ben-Veniste, a lawyer who served as a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal, told CNN describing Mr Quarles’ unique qualifications. “Having been there before, gives him the confidence to know how to do it and how to do it right.”

The choice of Mr Mueller as special prosecutor has elicited praise from many in Washington who are familiar with him. A former FBI director, Mr Mueller has established a reputation for himself as a steadfast and resolute lawyer. He is known for diligent and deep probes into issues, leaving no stone unturned.

His career has seen him prosecute a wide range of cases including drug-related murders in Washington, international terrorism, and he has even been hired as a private counsel to investigate the NFL’s culpability in Ray Rice’s domestic violence case (to give a good idea of his thoroughness: His write-up afterward included five pages just describing the NFL’s process for the delivery of mail and packages).
 
There is no way Trump will ever agree to sit down and sweat bullets under interrogation by Mueller's team. No way.

Trump will take it all the way to the Supreme Court, and if the SC rules against him, then he will defy the SC, with reasonable confidence that even if the House impeaches him (only 50% needed to impeach) the Senate will not convict him (2/3 majority needed to convict).

It will take massive, incontrovertible evidence of other wrongdoing to get the bastard out of office, and while IMO Trump is almost certainly guilty of such wrongdoing, the evidence is not yet sufficient, and may never be sufficient.
 

You could be correct about the lack of political will among Republicans in the Congress to exercise their role in proper checks and balances. And if you are correct, we move several dangerous steps closer to an authoritarian regime answerable to nobody but themselves. That grave constitutional crisis will sorely test us and could lead to the destruction of the Republican party as we know it.
 

I just hope that they don't allow him to write out his answers. I want him to verbally answer like most people are expected to do.
 
I hope we're nearing the end of this phase and after talking to Trump Mueller will start playing his big cards.
 

I am not yet worried about an authoritarian regime.

IMO Congress and Senate, Republican and Democrat, are all attached justly to their prerogatives and will successfully resist any attempt at unlawful executive authoritarianism.

Also, Trump himself will be answerable to the electorate in 2020, and I am not, yet, worried about him being able to subvert the will of the electorate when that time comes.

And of course, the Republicans themselves will have to answer to the electorate this year.

If the interview happens, it's unlikely he'll use non-trump-like responses like "I can't remember" or "I don't recall." To his mind, these are beta cuck responses.

It's unlikely Mueller would agree to that. There's no benefit in it.
 

The Republicans who run the Congress have shown not the slightest inclination to fulfill their constitutional obligations exercising checks and balances. We have sycophants like Devin Nunes who wants to use his position as Chair of an investigating committee to wipe the bloated behind of Trump and cover for him.

Once Trump catches on that he has nothing to fear from the Republicans in Congress - its Katie bar the door as then the restraints are off.

As smart as it would be to write stuff out or let the lawyers handle it, the more I think on it the more I think you're right.

What has Trump done that congressional Republicans should try to check and balance?

So far as is now known Trump has acted lawfully, and in accord with lawful Republican agenda, hasn't he?

If so then the congressional Republicans have no reason to do anything.

But you did vote for her in 2016. And you would prefer that she was president today. In other words, you criticize Trump for the very same things you would have been alright with under president Hillary.
