Most GOP Voters See Need for Revenue Increases

A new Gallup Poll finds that just 26% of GOP voters think a deal to lift the debt ceiling should consist entirely of spending cuts.

The vast majority of Republicans believe that at least some tax revenue increases are necessary, which is contrary to the current position of the Republican congressional leadership.

It looks like neither party is going to listen to their constituents. They'd rather pretend that they are fighting for us

The basic question and problem is who is the GOP's constituency? The Tea Party or business? Business interests want to see the ceiling raised, the Tea Party....well, I think we know how they feel.

It seems to me that the GOP isn't quite sure who they are right now. They used to be a center-right party, and many of the leaders (like Boehner) still fit that bill. BUT, they've been hijacked, partially willingly, by the Tea Party.

Yep, they're in between a rock and a hard place. If they don't raise the ceiling, their business supporters will have their heads. If they do, the Tea Party walks, and the lose the next election.

There is one poll that matters........that takes place every two years. The most recent was Nov. 2,2010--The Largest Political Asswhooping in history. Amid the overwhelming conservative landslide that took place from sea to shining sea........not one Republican or conservative that won........promised to go to Washington to raise taxes.

The American People spoke.........they voted for Cutting Spending........if they wanted tax hikes.......they would have voted Democrat.

Oh, and now a leader of the GOP is saying that if the country goes into default, the nation is likely to blaim them more than Obama, and Obama is certain to get re-elected.

:)

The American people want compromise. And thankfully, the majority of Republicans ALSO want compromise.

Increased revenue and decreased spending. This is how it has to be done. Cut billions in spending and raise billions in revenue through closing tax-loopholes. This is how it must be done.

If the American people wanted compromise........there wouldnt be a need for anything more than one party.

Speaking for the majority of Conservatives and probably a majority of Republicans.........I dont want compromise.....I want Obama and Democrats stopped.......and then their asses kicked to the curb in 2012.

We will probably get an answer to that in 2012. I suspect the answer is a simple one - the GOP will simply ask "how high" when the tea party faction orders them to jump. The leaders of the GOP know the alternative and they do not want to face that.

I said this 2 years ago and I shall say it again:

the Tea Party is such a good thing for the Democrats, that it might aswell be seen as a DNC false-flag. :)

"At least Mitch McConnell, to his credit, was willing to work for a solution," the president added, acknowledging the proposal by the Senate Minority Leader to, essentially, give him the authority to lift the debt ceiling without passing commensurate cuts.

"I have reached the point where I say enough," Obama concluded, according to Reuters. "Would Ronald Reagan be sitting here? I've reached my limit. This may bring my presidency down, but I will not yield on this."

Before Obama left the meeting, he gave lawmakers a directive. By Friday, the president said, the people in the room needed to have figured out what path they were going to pursue so that they could start hammering out the details.

Which would be akin to saying "November 2, 2010--The Largest Political Ass Whooping in History was good for Democrats".......

......the handful of them left in Washington anyways.

I'm sorry, but didn't the GOP win back the House AND the Senate, in 1994?

The poll also states that the country also does not want the debt limit raised. That's against what the Dems are argueing. So most do not want what either are selling. Sounds about right.

No debt ceiling raise. We can tax capital gains the same as regular income and tax trades. So there you have what most say what they want. I'd be good with that.

please quote the poll where it says that.

not raising the debt ceiling would mean cutting spending in catastrophic ways, that will effect the lives of tens of millions of Americans in ways they certainly do not want.

Indeed....primarily because the majority of the 1/3 of seats in the Senate up for election were Democrat seats........in 2010 it was only 19 (D) to 18 (R).....but 2012 is going to look a lot like 1994.....with 23 Democrat seats up for grabs. Its all over but your crying......

The smaller proportion of Americans who favor an increase to the debt limit, 22%, are most likely to believe the United States has little choice in the matter -- in other words, the action may be undesirable but is necessary.

22% favor raising it.

Spin. It doesn't mean that only 22% favor raising it. It means 22% think its necessary. Even more people think its' good. And once the deniers of reality stop recieving the SS checks, the deniers will come back down to Earth, just as they did when Newtie threw his little hissy fit
