I know times have changed.

But have they changed so much that you are at risk of arrest for allowing your 10 year old son to walk less than a mile to town?

=================================

A mom in Georgia is speaking out about being arrested for reckless conduct after her then-10-year-old son was found walking alone.

Brittany Patterson, 41, was arrested by deputies on Oct. 30 after a witness reported "a juvenile in the roadway" who had gone into and left a nearby Dollar General store, according to a Fannin County Sheriff's Office report.

Patterson's son, Soren, now 11, was later found by deputies around one mile from the family's home. Patterson had left Soren to take another one of her children to a doctor's appointment and didn't report him missing, according to the report.

That's weird. I have to believe this will be thrown out of court.

A 10 year old is perfectly capable of walking around on his own.

The article has this bit...

During the arrest, Patterson also said to one of the deputies, "Last time I checked, it wasn't illegal for a kid to walk to the store."

But the deputy replied, "It is when they're 10 years old."

It's illegal to let a 10 year old walk to the store?

Rural red state. MAGA country.
Fannin County- 82.2% Trump, 17.4% Harris.

Boy, that sounds stupid, don't it? Blaming ridiculous local laws and ridiculous local law enforcement on federal political lean?
Might have to bookmark this, might need it down the road.

I could certainly understand law enforcement's concern with the young kid walking alone considering the all to frequent child abduction instances we hear about.
But you would think after getting the story from the kid and the mother that no charges would be forth coming.
Might be more to the story.

2 year old yes, 10 year old, no.
Shit, my parents should be locked up til this day for neglect!

In the state, neglect by a parent can be defined as a "failure to provide a child with adequate supervision necessary for such child's well-being," according to a guideline.
Seems kind of vague..

Authorities said they would drop the charge against Patterson if she signs a safety plan that involves the use of a GPS tracker on her son's phone but Patterson told ABC News she is refusing to sign it.
You will be a helicopter parent, or justice will be swift!!

See how quick your relationship with your child goes south once you start tracking their every move.

And there I was, walking to and from school starting in second grade....
Barefoot. In the snow. Both ways. And there were wolves chasing me. And I was GRATEFUL. 😛

Seriously though, my brother and I used to walk to and from school when I was growing up in Albuquerque. Probably about a mile one way? He was 7 at the time, I was 5. But this was decades ago. Different times? I know there's no way I would have let my then 7 year old daughter do the same thing twenty years ago.

We need to know the details & context, before pronouncing judgement.

Did the kid have permission to leave the house? Or, did he take-off without the mother knowing? Was he endangering himself, while on the roadway? Is there safe passage on the roadway? Is it legal to walk upon the roadway?

Context matters.

Ok, so at what age do we deem a child capable of walking by themselves?

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but asking in general.

Was it in a school library? God help us!

Oh, never mind. That's thinking by one's self.

I will answer that question with another question. How sick is mom of you?

I bet good money if the kid took a bike this would not have happened.

I read this story elsewhere last week and it's just insane. This nanny government crap has GOT to stop.
