MLB 2016 thread

I have never been a fan of the DH, and I probably never will be. I'm a baseball traditionalist.

BUT though at 1st I didn't want replay in baseball, because over the many years I have seen so many, MANY blown calls, especially at 1st base, I'm kind of liking replay a little more now.

I hope they don't go too far with the replay. I agree with replays for calls at 1st base, at home plate, foul/fair calls and homerun replays because some parks are so screwy sometimes it is hard to tell if a ball is a homerun or not.

But again I HOPE they don't go too far. Especially balls and strikes.

I love this saying. baseball has no tradition it has probably changed more than any of the other major sports whole still trying to look the exact same.

Saying youre a baseball traditionalist means you like the baseball you grew up with better and theres nothing wrong with that but it is in no way traditional

I disagree. I think the other sports, especially the NFL has changed much more than baseball. The NFL of the 60's and 70's isn't even in the same galaxy of the NFL of today.

Also I don't follow your comment about baseball having 'no tradition' either. Baseball is all about history and stats.

Which stats? the stats of the dead ball era, the era without black players, the steroids era? none of them are comparable

This is what I meant about appearing the same as baseball's format hasnt changed while the game has changed greatly.

Ask 3 different people who the home run champ is and you will get 3 different answers

Ruth hit 60 in 154 games
Maris hit 61 in 162 games
Bonds hit 73 on steroids

Baseball has the illusion of looking the same but being vastly differe

Society changed, and some parts of the game with it. But baseball is still a stat driven game. Seriously if you ask a baseball fan who hit the most homers in a year 99% will know it was Bonds. They may put an * near his name, but they'll know.

As far as Black players go, they influenced the other sports more. So again I disagree, of the majors baseball has changed the least.

Anyway when I said I was a 'traditionalist' I meant mostly about the rules of the game.

As long as stats are taken properly in context, there's no problem. Unfortunately, most people don't know how to do that.

The sport that has changed the most radically from its inception is American football or basketball.

The proper context means the game has changed to a significant amount to need such context

Not really if you look at baseballs inception: different number of bases, length between bases, number of strikes and balls, field sizes that were vastly different.

If you take the starting point as the modernization of the rules: the forward pass, the shot clock, uniform rules in baseball, then baseball has certainly changed just as much as any of the other major sports.

Everyone knows its "officially" Bonds but that wasnt my point an you know it, a lot of older fans consider Maris or Ruth to be the real record holder or as you but it the "traditionalists"

Yeah, so? What does that have to do with me being a traditionalist when it comes to the rules of baseball?

Anyway baseball is much more about history and stats then any of the other sports, by a long shot.

Ruth is mine. Bonds should have been blackballed.

Babe Ruth played against inferior competition during an era where everyone that played baseball where white. Pre-intergration.

Barry Bonds is the greatest baseball player in the world. Babe Ruth probably is the greatest among white players.

It would be like comparing Michael Jordan to Larry Bird. Bird is easily the greatest white basketball player but all time among everyone? Maybe top 10.

Barry Bonds cheated.

So did Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, with all the amphetamines they took to improve hand/eye coordination, reflexes, bat speed, etc.

Not banned at the time, therefore not cheating. Everyone could use them, thus equal conditions.

Easily? Not so fast, Mr. Jerry West was right there.
