An arson and vandalism attack last month on an African-American church in Mississippi was carried out by a black member of the congregation, police say.

Andrew McClinton, 45, was charged over the incident, in which "Vote Trump" was also spray-painted, a week before the presidential election.

Police suspect the attack at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church was staged to make it look like a hate crime.

In the Mississippi case, the suspect has a long criminal record.

Mr McClinton was arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree arson on a place of worship.

He is due in court on Thursday in Greenville, where the fire occurred on 1 November.

So this seems to be another staged "hate crime" that was supposed to be from Trump supporters. I already had suspicions that it could be a staged hate crime when this story originally came out, and when considering how many of these so-called hate crimes over the recent few months that have been found to be hoaxes, I think that pretty much confirms it.

There should be a special hate crime law against those that create fake hate crimes.

There are already laws against falsely reporting a crime. Arson, too.

There seems to be a few of these fake hate crimes coming to light lately.

So we went from fake news, to fake crimes?

We're on a really great trajectory, eh? :doh

What's sick-making is that the man burned down his own church.

A whole damn lot of them. And that just shows that a lot of this hysteria going around is mostly unfounded.

Hysteria is manufactured for the most part. When it is fake like this it robs the validity from real issues. After awhile people just get tired of hearing about it or assume it another fake situation. It also gives ignorant people that justification, in their minds, to rationalize their prejudices.

You hit the nail on the head.

No he didn't, they already hated black people.

These kind of faux racist incidents allow them to justify NEVER changing their minds. It also cause people to say, "well, I guess they really are a buncha criminals".

I don't expect you to get it, but that's reality.

The fake ones are always maximised to minimise the real thing, like with rape.

What's really sickening is that the fact that this was fake will not be publicized like it was originally and that even when people find out that it was fake it won't make a difference. It will still be treated as a real thing in their minds.

If so, there's nothing to be done for it. I grieve for the congregation, especially because it was one of their own. They will rebuild, but you can't replace the history (to which an ugly chapter has now been added). This man, I've read, had a criminal history, but I don't know anything about his motives or mental state. How could you burn down your own church?

I too voiced my skepticism when the story originally broke. because it fit the pattern in recent years of fake hate crimes perpetrated by the left.

In fact, another fake hate crime was exposed yesterday:

Cops: U-M student lied about man threatening to burn hijab
Katrease Stafford , Detroit Free Press 7:51 a.m. EST December 22, 2016

A University of Michigan student who told police in November that a man threatened to set her hijab on fire could face charges after investigators discovered she fabricated the entire story, police announced Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Ann Arbor Police Department, detectives worked along with the U-M Division of Public Safety and the FBI to investigate the case, which had been classified as ethnic intimidation.

"Investigators conducted witness interviews and reviewed multiple surveillance videos of the area in question," the department said. "During the course of the investigation, numerous inconsistencies in the statements provided by the alleged victim were identified. Following a thorough investigation, detectives have determined the incident in question did not occur."
