Minnesota Art Professor Fired For Showing Depiction Of Prophet Muhammad

Why is a portrait of Muhammad considered disrespectful?

Hence, so meaningful, consequential and complex is the universe of man – a convergence of his spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical proportions - that no artistic idea and expression, nor any artist’s imagination, creativity, talent and skill, will do him justice. Every depiction of man will be insufficient and flawed, one way or another. It will be an unfair act of downgrading man’s importance and his honorable substance, mission and purpose. All failed endeavors will have no choice but to oscillate between one misguided artistic extremity and another.

Such an art will then become a form of distortion and falsehood. It will be misleading and dangerous.

Accordingly, man and his remarkable essence are undepictable and unrepresentable. They reside above the aptitudes of art.

I hope I am not expected to honor their tradition. Sure, those who practice the Muslim faith should abide by their bylaws and traditions. I on the other hand (or the teacher) should not be expected to honor 'their' traditions. I'll post a picture of Muhammed any time I want.

There are no pictures of Muhammed that are accepted by Muslims as such.

Look, I'm an atheist, but I'm not going to post pictures of Muhammed because there's no point to it other than it insults people I have no need to insult.

Why do we give more consideration to the Muslim faith regarding respect for Muhammad more than we do Jesus?

Even Hillary Clinton took issue with a movie that was made of the Muslim God Muhammad. We all remember those Benghazi details.

So were they right to fire the professor?

——-

A Minnesota adjunct professor was fired for showing a 14th-century panting of the Prophet Muhammad, despite taking extensive precautions before doing so.

Hamline University.
The now-former professor at Hamline University, Erika López Prater, warned students in the syllabus that images of holy figures, including the Prophet Muhammad and the Buddha, would be shown during the course. She asked students to contact her with any concerns, and said nobody did.

n class, she told students right before the unveiling that the painting would be displayed in case anyone wanted to step out.

Then, after showing the image, she was fired, the NY Times reports.

School officials told López Prater that her 'services would not be needed' next semester, and told students and faculty in an email that the incident was clearly Islamophobic.

I think they made the right decision in this case even though I rarely side with Goliath.

Also, the US is not a Christian nation so your Jesus is your belief.

I take it you don’t insult Christians either by giving Jesus the business. Good on you.

I would support this is anti Christian bigoted art also result in immediate termination

I had pictures of world leaders up in my class... some good some bad some horrible... I had a Jewish parent get really upset after her kid told her that I had anti-Semitic images up in the room. She set up a meeting with me and I could only assume it was the picture of Hitler. I asked if she wanted me to take it down and I was trying to see from their point of view. She said no. Turns out that a picture of Hitler was fine... a picture of Hitler giving the Nazi Salute was not though. I asked if just a regular picture of Hitler in his uniform not giving a Nazi Salute was fine and she said yes. All was good. I ended up taking down the regular picture anyway, just to avoid any future issues. I guess my answer to your questions is that everybody is different.

She should have discussed showing the painting with the department head to assure the university wouldn’t have an issue with it - and gotten that in writing if she wanted to assure a return to campus. She could have directed students to where they could find the painting, without showing it in a lecture hall.
There is literally no reason to do any of this. She was teaching what she was hired to teach and gave several (unnecessary) warnings to the class before showing the painting.

The university has decided they won’t be bringing her back again, as is well within their right to do.
And we are well within our rights to criticize them for their decision, particularly the president's pathetic statement that sensitivity should supersede academic freedom.

Islamic art is non-representational as a whole. A portrait of Muhammed is disrespectful not only of the religion, but of their artistic tradition since the 7th century.
So the Islamic artist who painted the piece at issue was bad at Islamic art?

Adjunct professors aren’t even “part time”. They are hired on a semester by semester or year to year basis to teach specific courses.
They aren’t on a tenure track, don’t receive benefits, etc.

Plenty of ways she could have handled the situation and didn’t.

The university slandered her and involved CAIR after the fact. They were wrong. The university needs to be paying out 10 figures and the idiot who called this instructor an islamophobe needs to be fired. As does the president of the university.

Sure.

I won’t hold my breath for your version of reality to come true.

The school kowtowed to a bunch of crybabies and Dr. Everrette, the man with the made-up special vice president of inclusion position, called her an islamaphobe. He also involved CAIR. That is unacceptable. It's libelous. He needs to be terminated and the school needs to pay out of the nose for what it did.

There is a huge difference between firing someone, and a decision not to renew an employment contract when the old one expires.

The school slandered this instructor in the press. They called her actions "islamophobic" and they were not. She gave each student the chance to object and none of them did.

The school crossed a line and must be held accountable to the tune of 10 figures.

Perhaps the administrators of Hamline University were not aware that the prophet Mohammad is depicted in the Supreme Court building. The prophet Muhammad, dressed in long robes and carrying a sword, is depicted along side Moses, Solomon and Charlemagne. Instead of demanding its removal, one top Islamic law scholar instead declared the sculpture an honor bestowed by non-Muslims.

All Hamline University demonstrated was a willingness to kowtow to the irrational demands of religious fanatics. They are intellectual cowards, and not someplace I would ever consider getting an education.

That they did.

I am in favor of the federal government yanking funds for tuition to this school. Clearly, neither students nor instructors are protected by the 1st amendment at this school.

And...she has sued and they are immediately backtracking.

After Lecturer Sues, Hamline University Walks Back Its ‘Islamophobic’ Comments
In an about-face, the school said that using the term was “flawed” and that respect for Muslim students should not have superseded academic freedom.

The school called Dr. Everrett's attack on the instructor "protected speech" which it is not because defamation nor libel are protected speech.

The correct procedure is to fire the president of the school and Dr. Everette.

Here is the same article but without the pay wall.
