Mike Huckabee: I'll quit the GOP if they give in on gay marriage and abortion [W:34]

Re: Mike Huckabee: I'll quit the GOP if they give in on gay marriage and abortion [W:

I am not an advocate for a jim crow south, however, if a state were to have such laws against a certain group then as a member of that group i could leave that state.

As was evident if the great migration. The point is, a federal takeover isnt necessary.

Its an extreme example as well. Lets take something more practical and realistic like education standards eh? If states are free to educate children as they see fit they would be forced to provide quality education, if they did not, overtime, citizens would leave that state in their ignorance.

There's a difference between being a testing bed for new ideas to compare and contrast against other states, which is the point of Federalism and that I fully support, and denying equality to a group of people. There's nothing to be learned or that will make society better by not treating people equally

If he leaves the GOP, where will he go? Is there another party that is so full of moral contradictions and patronizing religiosity that I'm not aware of? Maybe he should start the American Christian party, if he wants his hatreds or medical ignorance enshrined in some political platform. Even still, that would be insulting to the millions of pro-choice and pro-marriage-equality Christians in this country.

But, that's the problem when we decide that each person must be guided by their subjective interpretations of bible and constitution, where the latter is confused by many as an offset of the former. It's not.

We all have the freedom to believe that there is a god who likes gay people to be treated equally and doesn't give a crap about abortion, if we want to. These two things-marriage equality and reproductive freedom- are, objectively, good for this country to pursue. If your religion demands you treat certain people like second class citizens, then your religion, YOUR CHOICE, is pretty hateful. That there is a tradition of hate means about as much to me, as a voter, as the tradition of slavery. Yes, it's in the bible. Who cares?

I gave up the bible as a guiding document, especially for how I desire society to be structured, by the time I was old enough to see how the biblical influence made our country less educated and less civil. If a preacher threatened to leave my group, I'd be honored to say, "don't let the door hit 'cha where the good lord split 'cha".

Except that's not the way it really works in practice. Where states are allowed to have their own educational standards, they tend to go off into lala land, especially where people are more concerned with religion than reality. It is always secular society that has to come along and correct these people where their religious faith gets in the way of people's rights and common sense. That was the case with racism and slavery, it was the case with sexism and women's rights, it was the case with civil rights and it is the case with gay marriage. It has always been the small-minded religious zealots who have stood in the way of rational progress and equality for all, something that is guaranteed in the Constitution but ignored by those who flog the Constitution most often.

You have a skewed view of history. It was Christians who were the abolitionists of the 19th century and Christians who protested for civil rights reform in the 1960's. For the godless, atheistic Left to claim credit for civil rights in this country is absurd ratcheted up fortissimo.

No, it was the Christians who were on both sides, who were adamantly in favor of slavery and opposed to it. It's convenient that the Bible, otherwise known as the Big Book of Multiple Choice, can be read to accommodate virtually any position you might want.
