Mexico will vote to increase tariffs, and not against the USA.

On September 9, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum submitted a bill to Mexican Congress proposing amendments to the Import and Export Tax Law that would adjust over 1,400 tariff items. These adjustments cover key sectors of Mexican manufacturing, including automobiles, auto parts, motorcycles, textiles, apparel, footwear, leather goods, steel, aluminum, plastics and home appliances, among others. Post-adjustment, average tariffs will rise from 16.1% to 33.8%, primarily affecting imports from countries Mexico has not Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with, that includes countries such as China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey.
---
According to the Mexican Ministry of Economy, the proposed tariff measures are expected to affect only 8.6% of imported goods and aim to protect 325,000 at-risk industrial and manufacturing jobs.According to calculations by the Mexican Ministry of Finance, if the amendment is approved, it will increase fiscal revenue by approximately 70 billion pesos (about USD $3.76 billion) in 2026

I hope this passes.

Targeted tariffs, not blanket, across-the-board tariffs. And did you read the highlighted phrase?

A key phrase...

"...primarily affecting imports from countries Mexico has not Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with,..."

See the difference? The President of the United States routinely violates Free Trade Agreements, including agreements he negotiated, signed, and bragged about afterwards.
No agreement with the USA is worth the paper it's written on.

Targeted tariffs are just as dumb. Biden targeted low-priced EVs from China with a 100% tariff, in order to benefit 370,000 UAW scumbags. But that targeted tariff makes 250 million Americans worse off.

370,000 / 250 million is a small fraction of 1%

Does that sound like a net benefit to you?

Mexico has free trade agreements with certain countries, so putting tariffs on goods from countries without trade agreements makes perfect sense.

Well, those free trade agreements we have need to be disassembled. We are on the losing end of the trades. I wonder how much money these foreign countries contributed to politicians campaign funds to do that.

Ah yes, let's blame the foreigners/brown people for our problems, not the capitalists/corporatists who wanted these 'free trade deals.'

Pay attention. Trump negotiated, signed, and bragged about the trade agreement he's violating today.
An agreement with the USA is worth nothing, the word of the American President is worthless.
And, for your information, trade isn't between countries, it's between companies.

Ah yes, let's blame the foreigners/brown people for our problems, not the capitalists/corporatists who wanted these 'free trade deals.'
Wow. I didn't know you believed that. Why do you think so badly of the foreigners/brown people?

This isn't about race. This is about financial sustainability.

Yes, the corporations are part of it too. They want higher profits from slave wage labor.

She did it legally, only a portion of total imports, and it is targeted to protect domestic industry.

Hmmm.

Hey, can we trade presidents with Mexico?

Explain how.
Do you not know what a trade agreement is? Trade agreements are collaborations between economies. NAFTA/USMCA united North America into an economic engine. If the goal is success in trade among "member" nations, then it makes sense to disincentivize trade from those outside

Who benefits from the tariffs?

Yeah......Mexico......the paragon of economic wisdom.

Lol.

What the hell happened to the partu of Reagsn?

Wow. I didn't know you believed that. Why do you think so badly of the foreigners/brown people?

Apparently your sarcasm detector is broken. This seems to be a common problem with MAGAs.

This isn't about race. This is about financial sustainability.

Yes, the corporations are part of it too. They want higher profits from slave wage labor.

Are you a capitalist?

No, it doesn't make sense. Again, who benefits from the tariffs?

It works just fine. I just disapprove of your baiting.
