On September 9, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum submitted a bill to Mexican Congress proposing amendments to the Import and Export Tax Law that would adjust over 1,400 tariff items. These adjustments cover key sectors of Mexican manufacturing, including automobiles, auto parts, motorcycles, textiles, apparel, footwear, leather goods, steel, aluminum, plastics and home appliances, among others. Post-adjustment, average tariffs will rise from 16.1% to 33.8%, primarily affecting imports from countries Mexico has not Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with, that includes countries such as China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey.​
