"... Some in the Secret Service also came under criticism during Trump’s tenure for appearing to embrace his political agenda.

For instance, some presidential detail members urged other agents and Secret Service officers not to wear masks on presidential trips this year — against the administration’s own public health guidance — as the president felt wearing masks projected weakness, The Washington Post has reported. The Secret Service also took the unprecedented step of allowing the former detail leader to temporarily leave his job to become a White House political adviser. Anthony Ornato was hired as White House deputy chief of staff earlier this year. In that role, he helped coordinate a controversial June photo opportunity in which Trump strode defiantly across Lafayette Square to pose with a Bible after the park was forcibly cleared of peaceful protesters.

Ornato also helped coordinate numerous rallies across the country during the pandemic, per Trump’s wishes. The mass gatherings were blamed for increasing the spread of the coronavirus in some of the communities where they took place and left many in the ranks of the Secret Service infected or exposed..."

"MADDOW: What was the ultimate disposition of the Secret Service official agent who was moved into the Trump White House to take a political role ...I had not known that he had moved back to the Secret Service as an assistant director.

LEONNIG: He`s an assistant director for training. He`s very close to the director, the current director, Jim Murray. At the president`s request, at President Trump`s request, he liked his detail leader so much, Tony Ornato, that he asked him to be almost temporarily assigned on a detail as the deputy White House chief of staff.

In that role, the deputy chief of staff and former Secret Service leader was key in clearing the Lafayette Park outside the White House for the June 1 march that the president had to show how tough he was and that he was a law and order president prevailing over the protesters of George Floyd`s murder. He -- that same deputy White House chief of staff was critical in planning the president`s rallies as COVID spiked. And that ultimately led to 300 Secret Service officers and agents that summer either contracting COVID or being exposed to COVID so they had to quarantine away from their coworkers.

It was sort of an amazing thing. It infuriated so many Secret Service alumni because this is an agency that prides itself on objectivity, political independence. As they say in the agency, you know, the people elect them. We just protect them. But in this instance, you had a Secret Service leader working as a political entity and arm of President Trump...."

Other residents in the building said the two — who held several apartments in the building that they said were "being paid for by DHS" — had access to residents' surveillance cameras, cell phones and other personal information. Authorities later learned that many of the buildings' residents were in the FBI, Secret Service and DHS. Others were members of the Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy.

This is one mighty weird and scary story.
 
Good one. Sometimes you just have to point out the ignorance.
 
The date February 2020 only tells us when these two began posing as "various officers and employees of the U.S. government, including members of federal law enforcement agencies." We have no idea what all these government positions were.

What we do know is Taherzadeh and Ali were posing as FBI agents sent to Washington to investigate Jan. 6th when they were arrested.

What we do know is these two duped many people including at least 4 secret service agents one being assigned to Jill Biden's security detail.

What we do know is these agents have been put on leave and under investigation in part for allegedly receiving expensive gifts from Taherzadeh and Ali such as rent free apartments including a penthouse, iphones...

What we do not know is a whole lot of things including where these two were getting the money to pay for all of it.

Incompetence in the Government. Who'd a thunk it. Kinda like Feinstein having a Chinese agent as a chauffeur or Obama's security detail spending all their time servicing hookers.

I don’t even know how to categorize this story yet. On the face of it I’m going with this being an intelligence story.

Can’t even be certain whose intelligence it is at work if this is indeed an intelligence story:

– one person arrested has a Persian (Iranian?) name;
– the other person arrested has an Arabic name;
– a third person mentioned during the course of reporting has a Russian/Belarusian name and their gender hasn’t been clarified;
– the person with a Persian name is linked to a mess of corporations, some located in the Midwest, linked to yet more persons who may/may not be related to this unfolding case;
– there’s a lot money involved though it’s an open question whose money it is;
– there are expensive professional office spaces involved;
– the suborning or bribery of Secret Service personnel is really, REALLY problematic;
– the amount of detail generated to create this operation/program suggests even more money involved."
