McConnell Folds

McConnell just dropped his demands over the senate organizing plan.

Good for Schumer. Well done.

If you read the same thing that I read, he got exactly what he wanted so he does not need to object anymore. There will be a continued use of the filibuster to stop any democratic initiatives because he has the word of two Democratic senators that they will never vote to end it. He won.

Yeah, that's how I read it.

Yeah, that's how I read it.

And we need to make sure that every proposed reform bill that dies in the hands of the Grim Reaper, gets laid on the doorstep of these two senators. That is where political accountability needs to lay. We will start with the stimulus bill. When the bills begin to add up, they need to be punished.

Wow...the OP author thinks that McConnell getting two Democrats to clearly and unambigiously commit to keeping the filibuster means he lost? How the hell did he read that into the article. The Senate organizing plan was stuck on that issue...now thanks to two democrats (both of whom want to be reelected) that issue is moot.

If that is a "loss" for Republicans then I look forward to more such losses.

LOL...

You can't "punish" Joe Manchin. He will be the last Democrat from West Virginia to sit in the Senate for a very long time after he is gone. What has to happen is the Dems need to figure out hhow to win more seats.

Yeah...maybe not. Notice the right-leaning The Hill and McConnell did not quote either Manchin or Sinema as saying anything they haven't already said previously.

I think McConnell is trying to paint Manchin and Sinema into a corner. Senators generally don't like being manipulated. Not even by Turtleneck himself.
Lets hope so. We need their votes to end the filibuster, period. This country cannot go on with no federal legislative branch. Nobody is earning their money in that senate.

I think the pressure on Sinema and Manchin will become unbearable as the GOP obstructs every attempt by the Dem's to address America's problems.

If they persist, they should just change their party identification to Vichy Republican.

McConnell had suggested that the committee leadership be spilt between Dem and Repub since there was a 50/50 split. But he stopped pushing it when he got assurances that the filibuster would not go away

Hate to admit it. You are right. We need him more than he needs us.

That's okay, the Senate might be about to lose at least TWO Republicans anyway, maybe more.
And there isn't a thing McConnell can do about it if that moves forward.

If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

The problem is that this is 100% in his interest. He does not have to take the tough votes, if the threat of republican filibuster rips them off the calendar. That is why we have to stop laying the blame on the GOP, and start laying it smack on Manchin who is the McConnell enabler.

My understanding is this is actually the agreed upon plan by Biden. BTW, Manchen was not alone. THe good lady from AZ was also against nixing the FB.

But you can’t really do anything about Manchin. Getting upset at him is a fools errand.

He is one of the reasons that the Dems have the thinnest of margins in the Senate. Dems need to get more seats in two years.

You'd think the Institutionalists would call this a victory. After all, they always tout strict adherence to the Constitution which only called for a majority, not a Jim Crow tactic.

Sinema has been a disappointment to everyone for her entire life.

And Mancin is basically a Trump fan.

You can count me among those who want to see larger margins for Dems in both Houses. We could even give a thought to those state legislatures that have inadvertantly driven a stake through the heart of bipartisanship via gerrymandered and mega safe district lines. If you only need to appeal to one party to get the votes, you will not waste a moment on conpromise legislation that might alienate a large swathe of that party base come next election.

The Senate used to actually function with a filibuster,

They sound pretty dug in—but then so did McConnell and Graham about not letting any SC nominees go forward in 2020, until they did.

McConnell folds how?

None of the Republicans, and now backed by two Democrat Senators, would vote against elimination of the filibuster. That means there HAS to be compromises from BOTH Parties in order to get any legislation passed.

IMO what it really means is the Democrat have to cooperate and actually try to seek mutual compromises if they hope to go ahead with any of their policies.
