Senator McConnel Speech to the American Constitutional Society on why the Senate should not confirm another POTUS nominee for SCOTUS during an election

...We should not confirm any Obama nominee to the Supreme Court except in extraordinary circumstances. They must prove by actions not words that they are in the mainstream rather than we have to prove that they are not . . . [All] this is just a prologuec considering the constitutional harm and dramatic departures that are in store if those few are joined by one more ideological ally. We have to, in my judgment, stick by the precepts that I’ve elaborated. I will do everything in my power to prevent one more ideological ally from joining Sotomayor and Kagan on the court....

This is an extraordinary moment. A political party stating that a President who has wildly expanded Executive Powers does not deserve the presumption that his nominees to the SCOTUS will be passed or supported, based on their likely ideological standing, and the damage they could do.... to the American Constitutional Society.... to be received with a standing ovation.

Oh. Wait. This is Chuck Schumer back in 2007, talking about Alito, Roberts, and the Bush Administration. Woops. My bad, all. I got my soulless, ancient, white dudes confused.

Partly right. At least you realized that the soulless, ancient, white dudes are all in Washington. They're known as Democrats and Republicans. Common as horse turds, but stickier. Try not to get any on ya'. They all gettin' ready to strut they stuff on this SCOTUS deal. Gonna be fun to watch, eh?

He forgot to mention that Alito and Roberts were already confirmed while McConnell doubled down on stupid.
Let's see how many GOP Senators get thrown out this fall with the help of McConnell's blunder.
Such as Kirk, Toomey, Ayotte, Johnson, and Florida just for starters .

The right wing spin machine is really working hard to come up with justifications for an eleven month tantrum they have planned. In the span of the last few hours, I have heard a resolution from 1960, a misapplied quote from Scalia, and now a quote from one liberal senator to his constituents as justification. None of these will, I predict, prove to be particularly effective at winning the public debate in the eyes of the large majority of the population.

Yep. I'm looking forward to seeing what the SCOTUS looks like after Hillary Clinton spends 8 years putting people on it.

I predict that some people on the right will be a little unhappy.

It would be nice if the large majority of the population you refer to actually votes this time around.
Versus 2010 and 2014---amazing that 44 million less people voted in 2014 compared to 2012.

Drive up their negatives and drive down their voting percentages--still Nixon.
We now have 30 states with brand-new voter suppression laws thanks to the big tent DEMs not voting.
Laws working their way to the USSC .

hmm, sound racist.

as to the Repubs in the Senate, i predict they will bend over and give the king what he want, just like they always do.

Yawn. McConnell's same ol' same ol'. 100% obstructionist.

The video is of Schumer, not McConnell. And Schumer and other Dems never, to my knowledge, totally refused to confirm ANY nominee of a Republican President, even in an election year.

Just when you thought the Republican Party couldn't get any more batsh*t crazy,.......

Right just like a "large majority" of the population blame the GOP for the govt shut down and then gave them a huge landslide win for their efforts.

The half that already agrees with the GOP will claim its payback and the half that agrees with the democrats will claim its completely without precedent.

Only because they didnt get the chance to block any. The GOP pushed through Alito and Roberts with their majority just like the Dems used their majority to push through Kagan and Sotomayor

Are you calling that poster a Racist?
AND, who would the King be?

How do you like Trump trashing the Pope?
And calling Cruz a liar, among other charges, in his presser today?
Even very conservative Rep. Steve King from Iowa took Trump to task for that--saying he wasn't fit to be POTUS.

AND, do you agree with Trump saying his 3rd-party run is back on the table ?

hmm, thats a lot of questions

Are you calling that poster a Racist?
maybe, i listen to what other people say and judge accordingly. for example if someone has 3 threads in their sig about racism and durty white folks and white male privilege etc, i figure they're not a big fan of mine (but im just guessin)

AND, who would the King be?
who do you think the king is?

How do you like Trump trashing the Pope?
i love it
And calling Cruz a liar, among other charges, in his presser today?
is cruz a liar? wouldnt surprise me

eh, so?

AND, do you agree with Trump saying his 3rd-party run is back on the table ?
that would be fine with me

This is exactly why Congress has the lowest approval rating ever, not even 1/3 of the President's - and his isn't anything to rave about! :doh

Right just like a "large majority" of the population blame the GOP for the govt shut down and then gave them a huge landslide win for their efforts.

The half that already agrees with the GOP will claim its payback and the half that agrees with the democrats will claim its completely without precedent.

The 2014 election wasn't a landslide. They did only slightly better than expected to, given that Republicans often fare better in the elections between the Presidential election. Also, it was luck that most of the congress people leaving, for whom elections would then be held, were democrats, meaning the Republicans had a bigger than normal chance of gaining seats.

But this is an election year, when many more Democrats turn out, as well as independents. Also, there are more than a few Republican freshmen congress people who are up for re-election, giving the Democrats a chance to pick off some seats.

I also think the 2013 government shutdown hurt the Republican image insofar as independents and centrists go, further instilling the impression that the Republicans are merely obstructionist and don't care about the country as much as about themselves. (The shutdown cost the country about $32 Billion Dollars, and cost a lot of people their incomes during the time the govt was shut down. How would you feel if you were out of work without a paycheck for a while because some guy named Cruz was having a hissy fit about Obamacare?)

Also, the shutdown was a total failure. Its purpose was to cause a showdown on Obamacare. It had no effect whatsoever on Obamacare. Its only effect ws to create bad blood between Cruz and his co-senators, and to instill even more the image that the Republicans are about obstructionism and their own interests. Cruz was clearly trying to get his name in the national news...so the shutdown worked in that respect. As I've said before, he's a nasty piece of work. It makes me wonder how his parents raised him, that he turned out so narcissistic, arrogant, hateful, and smug. Amazing characteristics for one so unattractive and without any charisma.
