Senator McConnel Speech to the American Constitutional Society on why the Senate should not confirm another POTUS nominee for SCOTUS during an election
This is an extraordinary moment. A political party stating that a President who has wildly expanded Executive Powers does not deserve the presumption that his nominees to the SCOTUS will be passed or supported, based on their likely ideological standing, and the damage they could do.... to the American Constitutional Society.... to be received with a standing ovation.
Oh. Wait. This is Chuck Schumer back in 2007, talking about Alito, Roberts, and the Bush Administration. Woops. My bad, all. I got my soulless, ancient, white dudes confused.
...We should not confirm any Obama nominee to the Supreme Court except in extraordinary circumstances. They must prove by actions not words that they are in the mainstream rather than we have to prove that they are not . . . [All] this is just a prologuec considering the constitutional harm and dramatic departures that are in store if those few are joined by one more ideological ally. We have to, in my judgment, stick by the precepts that I’ve elaborated. I will do everything in my power to prevent one more ideological ally from joining Sotomayor and Kagan on the court....
