About 300 to 350 anti-Bush demonstrators rioted and 120 were arrested.

Love that anti-Bush banner...

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (CNN) -- Mayan Indian leaders have vowed to "spiritually cleanse" an ancient site in Guatemala after U.S. President George W. Bush visits during his seven-day, five-nation tour of Latin America.

Bush's visit to the ruins at Iximche, a one-time capital of a Mayan group, is part of an effort to show the administration is interested in all its neighbors in the hemisphere.

But many Mayans are angry that Bush is visiting Iximche, founded as the capital of the Kaqchiqueles kingdom before the Spanish conquest in 1524.

Mayan priests say they will purify the sacred archaeological site to rid it of any "bad spirits" after Bush is there.

"That a person like (Bush) with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked is going to walk in our sacred lands is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, director of a Mayan non-governmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, told The Associated Press...

I'm about as anti-bush as it gets, but have you listened to the BS spewed from these guys? They don't just despise bush, they despise America too. Purification after Bush leaves? Come on, seriously now.

How exactly is Bush persecuting their "migrant brothers?" By demanding that they migrate legally? I swear, the nerve of that man.

Ha ha ha ha I feel the same way. Oh brother.

See this...this is the face I use to express how much I care what a bunch of Mayan's think about our president. This is also the face I use to show how much I care about their primitive spiritual cleansing...and how much I care what Brittney Spears is doing in rehab. See...this is the face I use for all of that. Coincidence?

It's gonna take a keg of Pine-Sol to clean up the White House too when he's gone. :rofl

Just in case I get a phone call from an illegal, I am going to put this greeting on my answering machine.

"Good evening. Welcome to the United States of America. Press '1' if you speak English. Press '2' to disconnect."

Hope you American get more seriuse report about the Maya peoples anger then this one. Because reports like this one can just be shaken off as "look at those crazy foreigners" and ignore the facts. That USA have historicly supported brutale regime in Guatamala and other latin american countries that often persecuted the native population. This is maybee not reported and discused in America as much as it should. So you american can maybee satisfed to just remember the "evil " Sandinista and that you "braverly" supported the opposition against them. But the people of south america still remember and are not as easily getting over it. Also it's also todays politics of America that many in South america dislike.

But why should Americans care? Well both for economical reason that latin America can have big economic importance in the future and therfor it can be good for you that they don't focuse to much towards China and EU. Also that they can have a point that you politics towards then can be contraproductive in helping the development. A development that is needed if you want to stop the "unwanted imigration". Also latin american can get more political influence and then it can be good that you have a decent relationship with them.

The past action in Latin and South America, distasteful as they may be, have nothing to do with Bush. So yes, I feel pretty safe writing this off as "those crazy foreigners."

There are many attributions that can be made to the US with regards to the problems with latin america. However the responsibility ultimately lays with latin american's themselves and not the northern continent. The problems of latin america stem from the series of socialistic and protectionist economic policies, resulting in the governments of those countries taking money from the ppl but to make investment failures than have the same ppl pay for those failures.
Also, I don't see the connection with your economic problems and the "mayans" cleansing a site because bush went there. In otherwords, how do the superstitious measures some how make an impact onto the realities?

How could anyone be ignorant enough to believe this?

Stories like this are about as truthful as tabloids on the alien children of princess diana.

Well Bush is their as president of USA and to reperesent his country. That at the same time USA bad actions in Latin America is not that far back in time and also that many people in Latin America believe that their situation havn’t improved that much sens then and that USA policys havn’t changed that much. So yes it not hard for me to understand why people are frustrated or even angry with Bush visit.

Yes of course Latin America have a own responsibility. But at the same time it is pretty obvius that USA during the last hundred years have been heavily invovled in their development directly and indirectly. Directly by supporting goverments, overthrowing goverments and supporting guerilla groups and therfore also have a responsibility. Indirectly through the formation of trade policys and organization like IMF and the Worldbank. Just one example of you trade policy. That it’s easy to promote free trade that you take away your tariffes and they take away theirs. The problem? That you give enormous subsidies to your own farmers and that it’s just one example of unfair trade.

Also I don’t try to make this into a anti USA thread just have the hopes that you Americans have some understanding why people are frustrated and angry towards your actions. Just as try to understand why people are frustrated and angry towards the EU. (That in many ways also sucks)
