Matt Gaetz, one of the 193 House Republicans who voted against capping the price of life-saving insulin at $35 a month for most Americans last week, has justified his vote by saying that diabetes sufferers who use the live-saving medicine should lose weight.

In his newsletter on Friday, the Florida congressman wrote that his reason for opposing the Democrat-sponsored bill, which passed with the support of a dozen Republicans crossing the aisle, was that obese people are driving up the cost of the product, and not, as Democrats and activists argue, Big Pharma.


“While Democrat posturing of H.R. 6833 victimizes insulin payees as people with an uncontrollable disease that are being taken advantage of and need Big Brother to throw them a raft, lifestyle changes en masse would expeditiously lower demand and the subsequent prices of insulin,” Mr Gaetz wrote.

While I don’t agree with him voting against this bill, though I don’t know the details and what all is actually in the bill, he is right in that the majority of type 2 diabetes is cause be people being overweight and inactive

I agree! It's crazy to me more isn't being done to reduce obesity. It should start with good eating habits and exercise as a child. Eating crap food is normalized in this country. These foods should be labeled as the poisons they are.

My husband was born with Juvenile Diabetes. He went on to play hockey at a D1 school and spent a few years in the pros, both here and in Europe.

At 60 years old he could touch this little simpering fool Gaetz and knock him over. I'd like Gaetz to say it to my husband's face,

Being overweight and inactive does not "cause" Type 2 Diabetes. It's caused by your pancreas not producing the right amount of insulin and your blood cells not responding to and acting on insulin properly. Being overweight and inactive are issues when you are managing the disease.

I once worked with a lady who was diabetic, had to give herself shots several times a day, she weighed a whopping 90 pounds. I am not diabetic and don't know a lot about the disease, but obviously being overweight is not the only factor.

I know many thin diabetics. I also know many fat people who don't have it. Unlike Gaetz and others, I know about the disease. I too was gestational diabetic when I was pregnant. Insulin dependent. And I was 100 pounds when I got pregnant.
