Folks, with all the talk about "alternative" transportation modes, I would like to state unequivocably, that I am so glad that as of 2002, I no longer have to rely on that 40 foot monster known as the transit bus. To Liberals, they would love nothing more than to see everyone living in a squalid, rat infested urban area with a less than desirable mass transit system (Detroit, anyone??) The only thing new buses would do is give a band-aid solution to an arterial bleeder.

You realize that a lot of mass transit systems suck because they are either underfunded or mismanaged, right? I'd look at San Francisco's transit system as a relatively successful model (based entirely on my personal experience with it; I know absolutely nothing about its funding efficiency or how well it's managed).

For some reason I'm reminded of the Tea Party protesters that complained that the public subway in DC was too expensive or something like that.

Oh and by the way, mass transit systems are actually cheaper to construct/maintain than the current American road system, so if you want to complain about mass transit then I suggest you complain about the public roads system to maintain consistency (at least some libertarians are consistent on this matter).

I ****ing hate public transportation with the passion of a thousand suns

I like the T in Boston. Two dollars to take you to a lot of different places in the city is awesome. Plus the T runs through my campus so I can sleep in a bit and just jump on it and still get to class on time.

The entire Bay Area has awesome mass transit. I frequently took the trains because they would get my to my destination faster than driving on those horribly congested roads.

It all depends on where you live. If you live in a city not designed with the motorcar in mind, using one daily is often far more stressful and squalid that using public transport.

I used to live in London. I lived 5 miles northeast of my central London workplace which had no dedicated parking for employees. Driving to work was simply, practically impossible. I then moved jobs and in my new workplace I had my own parking entitlement but that workplace was 15 miles to the south west of the centre. It was simply impossible for me to get there by public transport in less than 2 hours. I had to drive. The 13 miles took on average 1 hour 30 minutes crossing the entire city in rush-hour traffic.

Despite the hurly-burly of the bus, the jam dodging was far, far worse. It was frustrating, stressful, expensive, and wasteful. The bus was cheap, slightly smelly, often packed but occasionally comfy and convenient.

I guess US cities are built for cars so cars are the best way to get about them.

I now live in a mountain village with 2 buses out daily, one at 5am and one at 5pm. Needless to say, I get about by a small, relatively eco-friendly and economic car. Or I walk.

We don't have any mass transit near where I live. If you don't have a car, then you better get a bicycle. Personally, I hope we develop better rail lines so we can have better long distance mass transit.

Whats the alternative to the alternative? Everyone owns a car or walks, not a good solution. Traffic is bad enough in heavy urban areas.

We used to hang on the back of the T (0n the outside holding the wiper) coming in from brookline to avoid the fare ;)

Well I am a student so it is like a dollar for us. Plus for 60 dollars a month it is unlimited for us. It makes those rainy days less painful to walk in.

Whenever I travel I use public transportation. I grew up using a bus system in a major city. It's gotten so much easier to use with the daily and weekly passes.

Where I live, it's impossible to get around without a car, as there is no public transport, nor is there any traffic. My town does not have a traffic light even.

We did it mostly cause we were the cool kids. ;)

When you told me that I ran outside to wait and look at a T. They must have changed the model because I don't see where you could have grabbed on. That makes me sad because I wanted to try it.

Oh the models are still the same. Well then it is settled I am going to be as cool as you were in the next few hours. And if I get in trouble I am just going to tell them I was trying to be as cool as Rev.

 Your already a little bit cooler.

You want to see a good modern mass transit system...look at Barcelona. They have an incredible system that puts anything in the United States to shame.

One of the European fellows that come to the U.S. during my internship this summer said the same thing. She was from Barcelona and it honestly sounded like a God send compared to that thing that is known as the Metro.

Seriously, Barcelona's system makes NYC's transit system look like something you might find in Des Moines.
