Good evening. I’m Marco Rubio. I’m blessed to represent Florida in the United States Senate. Let me begin by congratulating President Obama on the start of his second term. Tonight, I have the honor of responding to his State of the Union address on behalf of my fellow Republicans. And I am especially honored to be addressing our brave men and women serving in the armed forces and in diplomatic posts around the world. You may be thousands of miles away, but you are always in our prayers.

The State of the Union address is always a reminder of how unique America is. For much of human history, most people were trapped in stagnant societies, where a tiny minority always stayed on top, and no one else even had a chance.
But America is exceptional because we believe that every life, at every stage, is precious, and that everyone everywhere has a God-given right to go as far as their talents and hard work will take them.

Like most Americans, for me this ideal is personal. My parents immigrated here in pursuit of the opportunity to improve their life and give their children the chance at an even better one. They made it to the middle class, my dad working as a bartender and my mother as a cashier and a maid. I didn’t inherit any money from them. But I inherited something far better – the real opportunity to accomplish my dreams.
Marco Rubio is a great spokesperson for the Republican Party because of his skill as a communicator of conservative principles. He can explain the value of free enterprise and the value of our social values, without sounding like just another voice. You don't win arguments by saying that the poor are lazy, you win arguments by speaking of opportunity and values. You don't win arguments by screaming about cutting benefits, you speak of how irresponsible the current programs are and how we can make them more responsible.

I think it's crass to even have a rebuttal to the State of the Union.

When did that become a thing, anyway?

edit: 1976, it turns out. I probably would have realized that except I never actually watch the state of the union, much less the rebuttal.

I've seen him give speech here and there and on the Daily Show...He does seem an interesting politician, but his rebuttal was an idiotic.

Here is the summary of it.

First of all President Obama is name calling us, but we are better than that, we are not going to stoop to level of that Socialist, fascist, Arab, Muslim Commie, American hating Barak Hussein Obama person!!! No Sir...You see no generalization broad brushing coming from our party!

For the past 12+ years we have shown how much we loath the middle class specially the working class and have done anything everything and to prove it, but since we got our asses kicked by the very loathsome middle class, it turns out saying what we feel should NEVER be said out loud AGAIN...NO Policy or attitude change, but at least we can pretend to love you....So we love you!

And even though I did use government assisted programs to help me get on my feet, when I needed it, and my mom is also using these socialized programs even though I make lots of money and she doesn't have to, but hey free money is free money! But never the less these programs are not for rest of you common folks and we are doing everything to make sure the future generations will not have the advantages that we had...So Middle Class Screw you! But don't forget we love you!

Just a PR ploy and re-branding the party of HATE AND NO...Different Label Same Crap inside!

Did you have this exact sentiment 5 years ago, or is this just another partisan hack statement?

I doubt I listened to it 5 years ago, but if the next president is a Republican, I won't change that position.

The conservative message is a correct one. By speaking hatefully Republicans damage America, because liberalism takes over. Conservatives can win by ideas not attacks, Reagan demonstrated that. The message needs to be one and believe in people. The belief in the individual’s right to self determination is at the heart of conservatives. It was an effective rebuttal, and well delivered.

The way to win the trust of the people is by speaking the truth about conservative principals. Speaking about how economic freedom is the best way to alleviate poverty. Speaking of the values of family and how important marriage is in society, and about the negatives aspects of abortion. Speaking about how being financially responsible on an individual and national level is important to the security of our nation.

That is Rubio’s message, a message of hope for all. This is why we can and should win arguments, not with hate. The conservative message wins on facts, not scare tactics and hate

The “bottle gate” is a propaganda technique. The objective is to make the audience remember something petty and irrelevant instead of the counter-argument Rubio presented.
America is exceptional because we believe that every life, at every stage, is precious, and that everyone everywhere has a God-given right to go as far as their talents and hard work will take them.
It doesn’t mean that the U.S. is better than other countries it means that it is different. American ideology is based on liberty, individualism, absence of class distinctions, the belief that rights don’t come from the government, but from God.

Rubio didn't present an argument. He presented the standard catchphrases of the GOP.

"Liberals big government, conservative small government! Government bad! Freedom good!"

Rubio's response is utterly void of ideas. It has not an ounce of substance to it. Consider the second paragraph, a lame, weak effort to tie pro-life politics into some strange and ahistorical view of social mobility:

The State of the Union address is always a reminder of how unique America is. For much of human history, most people were trapped in stagnant societies, where a tiny minority always stayed on top, and no one else even had a chance.
But America is exceptional because we believe that every life, at every stage, is precious, and that everyone everywhere has a God-given right to go as far as their talents and hard work will take them.

What does a banal reiteration of American exceptionalism have to do with being pro-life? Nothing whatsoever. But Rubio makes the connection anyway. Because Rubio is empty of thought and short on ideas.

Like most Americans, for me this ideal is personal. My parents immigrated here in pursuit of the opportunity to improve their life and give their children the chance at an even better one.
America, the land of immigrants, the land of opportunity. To become a full-fledged American, it is only necessary to pledge allegiance to the Republic and to the principles for which it stand. And that is exactly what Rubio has done.

Presidents in both parties – from John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan – have known that our free enterprise economy is the source of our middle class prosperity....This idea – that our problems were caused by a government that was too small – it’s just not true. In fact, a major cause of our recent downturn was a housing crisis created by reckless government policies.
The truth is that the federal government is too big and wasteful. The solution lies in shrinking the federal government. As President Thomas Jefferson said, “the government that governs least, governs best”. The national debt reached 16.4 trillion dollars in 2012 and it is estimate it will reach 17.5 trillion at the end of 2013. Now is the time for true leaders to come forward and address this very critical situation. It is not going to go away until we take care of it. The sooner it is done, the better the future will be. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to do it.

And tonight, he even criticized us for refusing to raise taxes to delay military cuts – cuts that were his idea in the first place
Las February 5, Obama asked the Congress to delay the sequester with a short term fix. Obama insisted in balance the $1.2 trillion cut with new tax increases. He is the one that asked for the sequester. One ways to get the necessary cuts from this out-of-control spending is to let the sequestration go through as it has been done. Let the chips fall where they may.

Rubio believes that people are better off when they have the opportunity to succeed. He believe in the responsibility of society to provide a safety net for those in need and the moral obligation to help those who cannot help themselves. Rubio knows that while measuring the success of programs by how much you spend on them may sound good, the results are more important. Empowering the poor to lift themselves out of poverty and out of dependence on the state, is the best way to help our society.

Marco Rubio is an intelligent, capable, warm, caring individual with common sense Without the shadow of a doubt the left views Marco Rubio as a real threat to their utopian dreams. Their attempt to discredit him is expected, but their attempt to destroy him will fail.

When reason, facts and common sense overwhelm progressives, their only response is to attack the character of their opponent. For them anyone who is for liberty, freedom, justice for all, self responsibility, has morals and ethics principles is too far to the right.

Liberals must really be terrified of Rubio because this is just plain desperation. He drank water? Seems the asteroid is Marco Rubio's fault because he drank some water a number of days ago. What a ludicrous bunch of garbage. In reality what liberals are doing is to show their racist hatred for Hispanics.

He gave a great speech but he drank water. Rubio drank water, but Ted Kennedy left a woman to drown in the water. And of course we need not talk about Clinton and fluids and a blue dress.

There was nothing in the substance of Rubio's address the media could attack so the water thing was it. Well, if taking a sip of water is the only thing that the media can mock about the conservative response, then I'd say they are doing pretty well.

Rubio’s speech will be remembered for its content longer than Obama’s SOTU retread.

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio calls Jerusalem Israel’s capital

JERUSALEM — An influential Republican senator has called Jerusalem the capital of Israel, taking a stand on an explosive issue between Israel and the Palestinians.

The fate of Jerusalem is one of the most intractable issues in the Mideast conflict with both Israelis and Palestinians claiming rights to the city.

In his first official visit to the country, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio told Israel’s president on Wednesday that Jerusalem is “of course the capital of your country.” He reiterated America’s bipartisan support for Israel.

Rubio, a favorite of his party’s conservative wing, met Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
His visit comes ahead of President Barack Obama’s scheduled visit in March. Obama has not made a similar declaration about Jerusalem.
The water bottle goes global. For sure Marco Rubio visit to Israel would be covered by the Water gate “happy media”, bumping water bottles with Netanyahu.

A lame thread to be sure, however there is no doubt that Rubio is erasing his prospective future with his nonsensical demands for amnesty. This is where the much touted Republican Party Hispanic stars have revealed their deep flaws. In the end, they are Hispanics intent on dividing up the United States for their own people and culture.

Rubio has manages to turned the joke back on those in the liberal press who made it his Watergate. This probably will gain him some Jewish American voters, who vote 69% for Obama, in spite of his criticism of Israeli policy. But at least Rubio’s policies hold water compare to Obama’s bucket with holes policies.

Nice to see these two good men together. Rubio is smart, he calls a spade a spade. Jerusalem is Israel's capital, most persons recognize that. Eventually the U.S. will recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital too. There's a reason they call the Cubans "the Jews of the Caribbean". People in Israel will quickly recognize a friend and an ally.
