Many Americans prefer socialism to capitalism, new poll finds

Since it seems many people in the states don't really understand what socialism is... I doubt this poll has any validity at all.

Just people keeping up with the meme of "Money for Nothing".....

and your chicks for free.

Which is reflected in the fact that there's a significant age divide in the views, there.

And it's hardly a 'majority' or even large enough of a number to show any 'change' in people's perceived support of socialism - I don't see how 20% is 'Many'
53% of American adults cited capitalism, 20% said socialism and 27% said they weren't sure

It would be better if it compared socialism to democracy or communism to capitalism.
The entire poll is moronic

All Polls depend on wording...anyone can twist anything. We are a Republic, not a democracy; a democracy would be Mob Rule.

MANY prefer socialism? That is a pretty creative conclusion.

I dunno, I'd call one-fifth of the population (312,460,000 x 20% or about 62.5 million folks) "many." The thing is, most people don't actually know what socialism means, so the poll results are absolutely meaningless.

And many studies say that our education system is failing, now we have even more evidence to support that position.

People are taught in a positive light about socialism in the US?

I think it does. A lot of people are willing to back socialism even with the huge bias that's been built up against the word. IIRC, polls that ask people about socialist policies without actually using the S-word tend to get a pretty significant majority in favor.

It's about the same size as the Tea Party. I've heard that referred as "many people" more than a few times.

Separate school and state.

To my knowledge, it is not yet taught in a positive light. But, from the fact that so many think it is a good idea, obviously it is not taught enough. All students should be taught of the attempts to implement socialism and the known results of it.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republic and former Soviet Block Countries--People lived in abject poverty, they had to stand in line for basic food needs, no technological innovations except for military use and that usually stolen from the west and reverse engineered. Went bankrupt and dissolved creating current Russian and other countries. Dissolution ended the Cold War.

Cuba--People live in abject poverty,

Vietnam--People live in abject poverty

China--Some people still living in severe poverty, government changed policy to allow limited capitalism, improving the lives of many.

France--near bankrupt, has had decades of double digit unemployment. Conditions worsened to the point the France elected their current president, the first non-Socialist since being liberated from Germany.

Greece--Bankrupted by socialist programs, current government being held up by European Union to avoid total social collapse.

Ireland--Socialistic programs bankrupted the country and it was also bailed out by European Union.

European Union--many countries curtailing socialist programs due to economic down turn.

Many European counties privatized socialist programs during the 1980's and 1990's. They were unable to compete with technological innovations from America and other Capitalist based countries. Most notably in telecommunications, but also in Railways.

Socialized Medicine--Most, I said most not all, have total tax rate approaching or over 50%. Does not create or adopt modern technology until after paid for by capitalist based systems, most notably the US. Quality of care varies, highest care with the highest possibility of modern technology is at centers near the political center of the country. The Wealthy and Leaders go to America for care if it is non-emergency. England is now trying to privatize portions of it's medical system because it is too economically costly to maintain.

If American students were actually learning this history of socialism, the "most" would not be in favor of a system that has failed or stagnated at low levels and stifled technological advancement every time it has been attempted. Thus, if so many Americans are in favor of Socialism, then they have not been properly educated.

A large majority of the world actually think socialism is a good idea...
We are taught about the grave evils of "socialism" the USSR, China, North Korea and how bad "socialism" is... (even tho none of those countries arent even socialist)...

None of those countries were socialist...
Socialism is where the workers own the means of production; none of those countries implemented any of those ideas...

Cuba--People live in abject poverty,
Not socialist.

Vietnam--People live in abject poverty
Not socialist.

Not socialist...
And thats comical...

You say "socialist programs"... What do you mean...
And it is WAY more complicated than that....

Socialized Medicine--Most, I said most not all, have total tax rate approaching or over 50%.
No they dont...
Name the country...

Look if you wanna argue about socialism and the socialist system we already have a thread... Its here: http://www.debatepolitics.com/us-constitution/94893-why-socialism-and-communism-hated.html

The greatest case against socialism is the failure of an egalitarian government school system.

maybe they prefer socialism over corporatism? :3

Corporatism is government's problem. Government crashes private enterprise with wrongheaded regulation then demands more regulation to undo the harm government caused.

Since the right has called nationalized healthcare socialism for so long, it is entirely possible that people are assuming this what socialism is.

I think when many Americans hear "socialism", what they really are thinking about is a social-market economy, mixed-economy, and ecomomic systems like they have in Norway & Sweden.

Capitalism with a strong welfare-state, and strong regulations & protections to keep the economy under control and society fair.

Another socialist utopia that only looked good on paper.
