A 61-year-old Uber driver, Loletha Hall, is dead after Ohio resident William Brock, 81, allegedly shot her no less than three times in front of his home after both were targeted in a scam call that police say sent an unwitting Hall to her death and led to a murder charge for Brock.
The tragedy unfolded around 11:18 a.m. on March 25 when Hall — a driver for Uber for nearly 10 years, according to her son — arrived at Brock’s home in South Charleston. The woman was unarmed and posed “no threats or assault,” police said. Footage from a dashcam inside of Hall’s Acura shows her approaching Brock’s home, getting out of her car and then engaging with Brock and attempting to leave. But Brock trailed her closely, pointing his .22 caliber revolver at her and at one point, taking her phone away from her so she could not make any outgoing calls.
Police and prosecutors say that Hall had only come to Brock’s house after receiving an assignment from Uber to pick up a package there. Hall thought the assignment was legitimate but police said it wasn’t. Officers would later determine that the same caller, or their accomplice, had also contacted Brock that morning by phone and falsely started pressuring him for money in a scam involving an already incarcerated relative.

“Ms. Hall, unfamiliar with the circumstances which had occurred, arrived and made contact with Mr. Brock,” an incident report noted.

Hall made no demands of Brock, according to police and only asked him about the package she was meant to pick up. Brock started making demands about her identity and that’s when he took her phone and refused to allow her to leave. During the encounter, Brock “made no attempts to summon help or call 911 for assistance,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“Ms. Hall attempted to re-enter her vehicle to leave the property and escape, during which time she was shot by Mr. Brock, and Mr. Brock was injured in the subsequent scuffle at the door of Ms. Hall’s vehicle. Further exchange took place between them, after which Mr. Brock shot Ms. Hall again, and after further exchange, shot her again a third, separate, time,” an incident report stated.

It was only then that Brock called 911.
A police summary of that 911 call said that Brock told police “some Black woman” had come up to his house and that he had been receiving “threatening phone calls all morning.”

Somehow, Brock was justified because "some black woman" had come to his home. He was being scammed and reacted justifiably, right? I mean, she looks dangerous, doesn't she? And the gun is not an issue either. Am I right?

Guns in the news.

Again.

Once again we're reminded that the rate of deaths by gunshot in the United States per unit of population makes us truly exceptional among other advanced democracies.

Death by gunshot is one of the leading causes of death among our young.

Guns in the news.

Again.

Another life cut short.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . 'n un-shot.

This guy is definitely a racist piece of shit, on top of being a murderer. In no sense of the word can you even remotely describe his actions as justified. He had every opportunity to call the police  before, and instead chose to shoot her instead, when she very obviously wasn't a threat to him.

Moronic, evil dipshit. He better spend the remainder of his life in prison.

Hi, TheGoverness.

The take-away from this is that in a nation awash with guns, there are other tragedies happening every day. Thus far in this year there have been 397 unintentional shootings* -- almost 4 each day. Having a gun in the home is an invitation to an irreversible disaster.

The man who killed her absolutely deserves to be charged with murder, and I can't see any reason not to convict him.

I also think whoever tried to scam him needs to be charged in connection to this murder, if found, as they set her up, even if they didn't know who was going to get that uber assignment and just to mess with, intimidate him. That doesn't absolve him from his terrible actions in any way, as there was absolutely no justification for his response, regardless if he didn't know that she wasn't involved, as he could have simply called the cops on her if he believed she was involved in the earlier calls, instead of threatening her at all or killing her as he did. But those scammers were part of the reason she was killed so need to be brought to justice too.

The nRA should be along soon to explain how he would have knifed her to death, if he didn't have the gun.

Because, freedom or something.
This isn't really a gun story. Guy was old and crazy.

I'm not seeing anywhere he was justified. Who said he was justified?

Don’t worry, our “thought and prayers” will solve our gun violence issues in this country.

No it won't.
But enforcing laws to the fullest would go a long way.

Exactly the kind of people who shouldn't have guns.
Yeah but how you determine someone who shouldn't have a gun before they do something stupid like this.

I'm all for gun control laws just this story seems like a crazy old guy doing something horrible.

Haven't been here long?
Believe me, I was pre-empting the usual arguments SOME on here like to make.

Not to mention solving our OMG IT'S A BLACK PERSON ON MY PROPERTY!!

There isn't any excuse for this man. He murdered her and should spend whatever he has left of life in prison.

This lady would be alive if this man hadn't had a gun. There really isn't any argument to be made against that either.

This man was a "good guy with a gun" for 80 years.

"Some black woman" isn't racist. It's referring to a basic description. The narrative that is trying to be told. This is tragic. Not only did someone die. But you have individuals trying to make common sense into something racist.

Do you think he would have said "some white woman" if she had been white?

Yup, he used a knife or a baseball bat, didn't he?
I can show you a million other stories where people are stabbed to death. This isn't one of those stories where our gun laws need to be stricter.

He needs life without parole.

The scammer needs 25 years in prison.

The picture alone tells us that man will spend the rest of his life in jail for murder, but that said all of the evidence that is very likely to be brought forth in the case itself against this man seems overwhelming to any plausible defense argument.

We've been down this road many times with many cases, and more often than otherwise the shooter ends up convicted and in jail. As they should be.
