From the looks of your posts, I think that's been going on for quite some time. :rofl

I'm not talking about a liscense, I'm talking about citizenship. The right to drive isn't in the constitution. By forcing someone to pay for English lessons you are already disadvantaging someone who is already disadvantaged. I don't see how that's a very accepting environment.

Why do you need to speak english in order to vote? How does that affect anything so long as the person understands who they are voting for, except of course for the fact that minorities generally vote democratic? Does that have to do with anything here? It's ok, you can say so if it does.

Ya I can see the hard ship looking for 90 or 150 buxs over the course of 5 -7 years. If thats a hardship for you then your screwed anyway and should consider relocation.

You don't understand the language how exactly do you know whats going on. If you can't understand the process you shouldn't participate in it. Specially if your ignorant of the understanding by choice. Votes determine the course my country takes. And if your not willing to invest a little time and or money in understand the language I would rather you not vote in ignorance for the direction of the country

Because there not learning the english language when they immigrate here. I will speak spanish the day I move there. Thats kind of the point of the whole thread

English should be made official. It was the language of our constitution, it is the language of our history, and its one of the few cultural things that really binds Americans to each other.

Go to your local market that caters to the immigrants. When I go, I see papers for the Hmong, Vietnamese, Hispanic/Latino, et al in their languages that deal with the politics du jour.

Actually, the whole point of the thread, which has never since been defended by the OP, was that making English the official language would help on the war on terror.

Except for the ones that don't speak it.

I was bored and bolded all of the mistakes made in English by the proponents who want English to be the official language.

Your so clever. How did ever become as clever as you. You can't read or comprehend all to well. But boy o boy are you one clever little bugger. I have never claimed to be an english teacher, nor have I asked for immigrants to be english aficianodo's<sp>. I am asking them to have a working knowledge you clever clever boy. If you can't or won't learn the language get the frig out of my country. I don't care about your hardships or your family needing you to send money. If they need money go to france don't learn there language and send em some friggin Euro's. If you don't like that tough sh it. You don't have the ability to comprehend my language I don't want your third world as s screwing with elections. Clever check for mistakes, i'm sure you will find some. But I think the general idea is there :2razz:

I found a lot of mistakes. The point being, if you can't be inconvenienced to learn your mother tongue and the language you're rallying behind properly, why should they?

Because I can speak, and understand the language. If they can't make the attempt, I don't want them here. I for one will not consider hiring them if they don't understand English, and will press for that sentiment in the people I know. I may not be as clever as you, with your bold letters making stupid points. And yes it is a stupid point your making, but I expect it from you. As I have said more then once. But I will repeat it since your not smart enough to understand. Clever does not equal smart. Your a walking testament to that. I am not asking for them to be fluent in the language, just a working knowledge. Until that happens there support for any endeavor should be nil. They should have no access to the political system and limited acess to government programs. If they can't survive move back to wherever they came from and consider immigration to another country.

They would emigrate to another country not immigrate.

Gee, let me make this ultimatum. I don't want anyone in this country who cannot properly speak and write in English. It is the official language of the country and if they don't like it, they will have to leave. I see no reasons against having these high standards.

Sounds like a plan to me. I have no doubt I can go through your post and find plenty of mistakes. I don't fix typos usually when i'm posting. But if you want to correct my errors thats fine. Although I don't understand what's wrong with a number of the ones you highlighted.

Stop being a smart a ss and we can keep everything civil. If your going to try invalidate my point by highlighting typos or missed punctuation then you can kind of guess were things are going to go.

I personally have been bothered in the past several times by finding out half-way through a cab ride that my driver speaks minimal english. There are certain jobs in certain circumstances (in which communication is not a job-related skill) that being fluent in english is not a necessity. But for a cab driver, who is constantly having to communicate with passengers, to not understand more than 5 words I say is ridiculous. The first few years a non-wealthy immigrant spends in this country are undoubtedly difficult. But is it so much to ask that progress towards english mastery is expected, on at least a minimal scale.

I feel like if more emphasis was placed on learning the language, a very favorable response would be found. Many immigrants are willing to go throw immense trials and tribulations, often times leaving their families back home while they try to raise money in the states. I'm sure that learning basic (by basic i mean more than primitive but not quite Shakespeare...so that they can carry on day to day conversations) english would represent little more than a minor inconvenience comparatively. Who knows, mastery of the language might instill in some of these immigrants a greater sense of pride, and belonging in this country. I see it as a plus.

Syntax, spelling, grammar are the three main issues I'm checking here. You're more than welcome to learn the language of the United States of America that you're suggesting.

I would guess they'd have to go to the basement since we do not allow flaming in this forum.

According to this crew if your an immigrant nothing should be expected of you. You should be able to hang out all day and do what you feel like. You shouldn't have to learn anything about the country your living in, it's laws or its customs. Yet throught all tat they should also get every perk, program and right of every other english speaking citizen.

Guess then it would be tough shi t. Your ability to bold in a forum is to the point of scary. Your true mastery of the english language and it's proper syntax, spelling and grammer are special. Thats because your soooo clever. And we all know what clever doesn't mean. I am sure you can find at some point the post were I am asking for all to be proficient and the ability to use the language extensivly. ...OOOOOPPPPPSSSS no you can't. Again the fact that YOU are wrong doesn't surprise me much.

BA·SIC or Ba·sic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bsk) - Of, being, or serving as a starting point or basis

ru·di·men·ta·ry ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rd-mnt-r, -mntr)
1. Of or relating to basic facts or principles; elementary.
2. Being in the earliest stages of development; incipient

Now thats what I asked for

mas·ter·y ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mst-r)
n. pl. mas·ter·ies
1. Possession of consummate skill.
2.Full command of a subject of study:

And this is what your tyring for. I figured I would show you the definitions. Although I may have the grammer or syntax wrong, at least I can comprehend the definition of some pretty common words. You study these and we can try again. And try realllllllllllllllllll hard.

Yes, but in the United States of America that I personally envision, people will have to know the language and speak and read it properly. Your contention may be different as you've elucidated in your post but mine remains the same for these purposes. If we're going to have an official language, it is best that it is used correctly. Although I may know the correct usage between the contraction "you're" and the adjective "you're", a person who has immigrated here might not. The incorrect usage may confuse them and consequently they may need to revert to their mother tongue to comprehend what is being spoken by a native United States citizen. Since that could be problematic, any deviation from proper usage is strictly forbidden.

If they are to stupid to understand the word in the context of the conversation we should toss them on a truck and deliver them back to whatever sh it hole they came from. The third world america you envision is going to be a scary place. Filled with everything but americans and an ACLU lawyer on every corner to make sure the lazy and twisted get everything the hardworking people do. Why should you have to work for anything as long as you have a green card and lawyer.Thankfully it will never happen in my life time, and hopefully not my childrens.

No have fun with your bold button again. I know how it helps you feel important.

Yes, but what if they're too stupid to know the difference between "too" and "to"? I can draw the lines capriciously too. I can also build a tall strawman that would shadow across all of the amber grains and purple mountains majesty.

I am American Indian... Don't preach that crap to me. I know the history of this country and it is just that, history. I have no clue what your getting at, but this thread had nothng at all to do with dem kulered or kuntry folk.

See I know the difference between to and too. But alas it's easier to take the short cut when your typing. Specially when you can't type. But you just keep trying to feel superior, your almost funny ... little more pathetic though.

Long as that strawman has the ability to communicate in the english I have no problem with that. Unless thats the case he can go back to whatever third world he came from.

I am sorry if you feel giving people everything and expecting nothing is the way to go. Your america will be filled with people that have no desires or dreams. Why try, when whatever I do I will be given it. You should'nt expect anything from anybody, and you will get even less. Setting a bar to reach for is not a bad thing, and some goals are worthy. But your desire to require nothing from people that want to partake of this country is mind boggling to me.

If you don't have a basic understanding of the language you shouldn't be living in this country. You have 7 years to aquire that knowledge. If you haven't in that time you should be uprooted with your family (unless they can speak english) and sent back from wherever you came from. It's not asking much and it's not asking for much in a short period of time. Its a basic understanding in a little less then a decade. If you can't do that I have the feeling you have nothing to contribute to this country in the first place.

Please impress me with your bold button abilities. It's pointless but it's entertaining at the same time. Like watching an illegal alien run away from border patrol

You'll have to show me where I said that. I've said the opposite now. You need to show you have expert proficiency to live here. You are failing. As such, we are going to have to ask you to leave.

"From wherever you came from" doesn't make sense as a sentence. I don't understand your "basic" English. It appears you have nothing to offer this country. As such, please leave.
