The Orioles re-signed Mark Trumbo to a 3 year deal. A good move if he produces homeruns anywhere near like he did in 2016.
You know he is going to strike out around 200 times.
I can tolerate that if he hits around 40+ homeruns and around 100 RBI a season.

It was an excellent signing by the Orioles and clearly representative of the cratering market for power hitters this off season. It almost looks like ownership collusion to me, the way Encarnacion and Bautista were treated along with Trumbo and some other mid-low 30s power hitters. Encarnacion and Bautista have led MLB since 2010 in homers and RBI. And I'm totally ticked off that the Jays didn't do much more to re sign Encarnacion - the way they gave him about a day to decide and then rushed to give Morales $36 mil over 3 years was managerial misconduct in my view. At least they were able to bring back Bautista so I won't be totally ignoring them this season.
The money being dished out to relievers is also a major detour from normal off season action. I can't help but think a lot of these arms are going to be wasted contracts as time progresses. GMs suddenly decided that relief pitching wins championships because of Kansas City two years ago and Cleveland and Chicago this year. We'll see if that's a smart move going forward.
Anyway, have fun this season and I look forward to Bautista haunting the Orioles again for at least another year.
Jose Bautista is on the decline, a rapid decline.
Let's understand the situation. No other team offered him a contract besides the Blue Jays.
News flash: Arizona is going to suck again.
Cardinals punishment for the hacking is finally going to come out this week.
Slap on the wrist, not surprising the MLB has never really had the stomach for strong punishment
MLB orders St. Louis Cardinals to forfeit top 2 2017 draft picks, pay $2 million to Houston Astros
With the lack of evidence that anyone but Correa knew I think it's appropriate. We benefited, so we deserve a balancing punishment. But no need for punitive excess.
Now your boy Correa is trying to claim that the Astros hacked the Cardinals 1st and he was just hacking them back.
Man behind Cardinals hacking case says Astros hacked first and MLB turned deaf ear - CBSSports.com
The Astros also issued a statement, saying they support the ruling and penalties.
"This unprecedented award by the Commissioner's Office sends a clear message of the severity of these actions," the statement said. "Our staff has invested a great deal of time in support of the government, legal and league investigations and are pleased to have closure on this issue."

Encarnacion is 34 and got a 3 year deal worth 60 million. He also is coming off a season with his lowest SLG, lowest AVG, and second lowest OBP since 2012. Bautista is 36 years old and coming off a season that was well below his previous production level. He may bounce back, but he's getting to the age where a player's skills can sharply decline and he still got 18.5 million dollars for next season, with a mutual option for next season and a vesting option for 2019. Trumbo is 31 and coming off his best season where he set career highs in slugging, HR, RBI, Runs, and hits. And even there, he wasn't really a great player due to his horrendous OBP. How much money would you bet that he'll replicate those numbers?
Yes there was a time these guys might have gotten even fatter, premium contracts, but I don't think the change in the market is collusion. Its organizations getting smarter and recognizing that guys who offer one skill have limited value and signing folks in the mid 30s to big multi-year contracts is a risk.

The Jays gave Encarnacion four months to decide. He's the one who cut off negotiations in April, not the FO.
The money being given relievers makes a modicum of sense, since they're largely short-term deals (outside of the lunacy that was the Chapman contract, but hey, it's the Yankees).
Many teams are going to be pitching their starters 6 innings, and that's it. Relievers are going to be more and more important. Yeah, the Chapman contract was stupid, but sometimes that's the Yankees. But some of these other relievers are going to be making more and more money. Middle relief is going to become more and more important. Somebody has to pitch the 7th and 8th innings to get the game to the closer.
Rumor is that if the Cubs latest two acquisitions pan out, Maddon will be going with a six man rotation this summer.
That might change things in the bullpen...
