Good move by the Engineer IMO. Kid was WAY too close, didn't heed warnings from the horn, and might have even been close enough to get hit by a wider car or something protruding off the side of the train.

HiRqMj5.jpg

Why would I not be surprised though if the Engineer gets sued or fired?

Frickin' idiot.

I don't understand why he had to be 6 inches away from the damn thing. Trains are big. If he just had to do the train selfie, he could have been 10 feet away and still gotten the all-important preening shot.

I'm sure he's fine. There's clearly nothing in his head to injure anyway. I'd say I hope he learned something, but... well, see the previous sentence.

What a stupid and careless person with a foot! What if that kick had caused him to lose enough balance to end up closer than he is, ie under the train. Seems the kid had his distance from the train correctly figured to cause no harm. Morons on the train should be up on attempted assault charges.

On another site that is discussing this, somebody (who thinks the engineer should lose his job and get sued) said that he was sticking his leg out so the kid was probably "at least 4 feet away". That got this 'shop posted in response:

Attempted assault charges? More like attempted suicide. You see that thing circled in red? That's a hunk of metal that would have hit the kid in the skull if not for the foot. If you stand close enough to the train that the engineer can kick you...you deserved to be kicked. Too many people play around trains as is.

I do see it, I don't see that it would have hit him at all. It's well behind any part of the foot/leg that is extended. I think perhaps it'll be used as an excuse but that seems very flimsy compared to the way more likely injury that could have occurred from a foot up the side of the head which may have caused the kid to fall in a manner to be way more damaged by the train.

Um, Summer? That kid would have had part of his head chopped off if the engineer hadn't kicked him. Look at those pictures again. He's being kicked about 2 inches from the side of the train, and there's a hunk of metal behind the leg that is clearly right beside it -- it's pressing his pant leg in.

He was so close to that thing it could have kissed him on the cheek. And it very nearly did. He obviously didn't have this worked out, and even if he thought he did, it's frickin' stupid to stand within inches of a moving train.

Merica.

Not only that, but look at how much wider the actual cars are than the locomotive...

This is the sort of thing that needs to be encouraged. The gene pool could use some improvement, after all, and natural selection is a great way to do it. Let's take down the signs warning people to stay off of the tracks. While we're at it, people need more pedestrian access to freeways as well.

And then there are the zoos. Why bother to warn people about hand feeding the lions? That is exactly the sort of thing we need to encourage, maybe sell raw meat to zoogoers for that purpose.

Let's get more people qualifying for the Darwin awards.

Well I'll stand down, but I don't see that piece of metal, if it is metal, being as close as you are suggesting. And me personally, being evil as I am, would rather see the wound he would've self inflicted than to see someone kick him in the head knowing that outcome could be much worse than a a piece of metal scraping past his head. Head gashes look bad, but are rarely that serious.

On the bright side, if the engineer hadn't kicked him...well, we just haven't had a good Darwin Award candidate in quite a long time.

It's up against the back of his leg. I'd call that close enough... and besides, it's not like the Engineer can accurately gauge whether that piece is 6 inches away from hitting him or about to smack him square in the side of the head.

I think perhaps it'll be used as an excuse but that seems very flimsy compared to the way more likely injury that could have occurred from a foot up the side of the head which may have caused the kid to fall in a manner to be way more damaged by the train.

Flimsy? Really? A deck of sheet metal that is made to get walked on is more flimsy than a leather boot? Is this real life? Seriously Summer, if ANYTHING else on that train (other than that boot) had hit that kid in the head, he'd 100% without a doubt be DEAD. No question. I'll give you that he COULD have stumbled backwards, but what was the Engineer supposed to do? Nothing? Just let him get nailed by the decking or the first car?

Kid is also wearing a backpack. Could have easily gotten snagged.

In the end of the video, the kid's head snaps back to way closer to the train than it was to start with. Again if the goal was to get his head away from a piece of metal as you're describing (which I don't see, I see a small piece of metal sticking out, nothing akin to a walkway) then his head would've been gouged anyway, and it wasn't. I think the perspective is jacking with a lot of people, perhaps me as well. I'd sure like to have seen it from an overhead view. Without that, it's all opinions.

Clearly the train wasn't moving that fast otherwise the engineer wouldn't have stuck his foot out.

Looks like it goes the same way the train is traveling to me.

2 Things...

1) Watch the gif. That "small piece of metal" is the same metal that the walkway decking is made out of. As in, not "flimsy metal".
2) Again, the Engineer can not be expected to perfectly gauge whether that certain piece of metal is going to hit him or not... especially as the train quickly approaches and goes whizzing by.

His goal was to prevent him from getting hit by ANY of the other things that stick out farther than his foot did. A foot/leg will "give" some on impact. The other parts of a train do not. They are solid and they have a LOT of momentum.

I think the perspective is jacking with a lot of people, perhaps me as well. I'd sure like to have seen it from an overhead view. Without that, it's all opinions.

It wouldn't be a debate then. ;)

Sounds to me like a quick thinking engineer saved the life of a stupid kid who was much too close to a moving train.

The engineer's foot is resting on it, the engineer's foot hit the dude in the head. 1+1

I like your thinking. Its time to whittle down the gene pool.

I would like the post (it's humorous), but I'm afraid I'd be one of the first to reach their demise due to Darwin laws...

Wow! That's kind of harsh. I think both of them are idiots. The one standing too close to the train (because it is probably hard for the conductor to tell if he is close enough to get hit or not), and the person who kicked him in the head. He could have seriously injured him by kicking him in the head like that.

He should consider himself lucky that it wasn't a stray piece of metal sticking off of the train itself. The moron probably wouldn't be alive right now.

Edit:

Nevermind. I should have looked closer before posting.

The engineer saved this idiot's life by kicking him. Good on him.

I hope he doesn't lose his job over it.

I bet some people here think that pushing someone out of the way of a speeding car is assault too.

And they let them run around unmedicated...

Is that the piece of metal that's circled in red. I didn't really notice that it might hit his head, so maybe you're right.
