Jury finds LA protester not guilty of assaulting border patrol agent

A protester was acquitted Wednesday of charges that he assaulted a federal agent during widespread protests against immigration crackdowns in Los Angeles, just hours after one of the faces of President Trump’s enforcement policies took the stand to testify against him.

U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino — the brash agent who led a phalanx of military personnel into MacArthur Park this summer — was called as a witness Wednesday in a federal misdemeanor assault case against Brayan Ramos-Brito, who was accused of striking a federal agent.

Bovino, who flew in to testify from Chicago, the latest city targeted for an immigration enforcement surge, said he witnessed the alleged assault committed by Ramos-Brito in Paramount on June 7.

Bovino was questioned by the defense about previous comments he made referring to undocumented immigrants as “scum.”

The jury came back with the acquittal after a little over an hour of deliberations....

Judges cannot overturn "not guilty" verdicts in criminal cases due to double jeopardy. They can overturn "guilty" verdicts.
That's why they need to take the juries out of the equation.

So this account makes it sound as if the judge turned the illegal immigrant loose because someone had referred to him as "scum". Hardly an adequate reason. Of course it's California and I imagine a liberal judge. Why the left is so interested in helping criminals is amazing.

At trial, Cuauhtemoc Ortega, a federal public defender, sought to cast doubt on Bovino’s credibility, questioning him about facing a misconduct investigation several years ago, which resulted in a reprimand for referring to undocumented people as “scum, filth and trash”, the LA Times reported.

After Bovino responded that his comment was in reference to a “specific criminal illegal alien”, Ortega read from the reprimand, signed by Bovino, which said he was describing “illegal aliens”, the newspaper said.
Bovino has previously faced scrutiny for making false and misleading statements. He defended a major immigration sweep in January by claiming agents had a “predetermined list of targets”, many with criminal records, but documents showed that 77 out of 78 people taken into custody during the operation had no prior record with the agency, a CalMatters investigation revealed.

And in June, while defending the arrest of a US citizen in a high-profile case, Bovino falsely claimed on social media that the man was charged with assaulting an officer.

The above from the linked Guardian article is good news indeed for future trials — Bovino is a proven liar.

None of this remotely reflects what happened.

Please see complete excerpt from the Guardian in post #8.
Bovino’s comment was general to undocumented immigrants, proven by Bovino’s own signature on the reprimand.

You sound upset.

Interesting take on the excerpt from the latimes that talked about the jury's verdict.

What do you believe you know about the judge's part in the jury's decision to return a not guilty verdict, which resulted in "turning the illegal immigrant loose"?

Perhaps @Integrityrespec's issue is not with "judges" but with our country's system of having juries return verdicts in court cases?

Or perhaps this jury verdict, with which @Integrityrespec appears to disagree, has triggered him/her/them to the point of proclaiming, "the left is so interested in helping criminals"....

It's still funny that Democrats loved the idea of Whole Of Government until Republicans started to use it.

Explain the above (Post #17) in relation to the jury verdict in the OP.

It's as funny as Republicans being against the idea of Whole Of Government until MAGA started using it.

I'm not taking special requests today, but since Ikari gets it, perhaps you should ask him.

if he was found not guilty he is not legally a criminal.
you calling him a criminal doesn't make him one.
why you think you can judge a person from afar is amazing.

So, you don't want to explain your message (Post #17).

Thanks for letting us know.

I suppose I could try to translate it into whatever happens to be your primary language, but Da Rulz would not permit me to post it.

Perhaps you'd like to propose a rule change to management. Good luck.

The jury are radical leftists who should be jailed and if any of them have talk shows those shows must be cancelled.
