The Choice Program, which was put in place to speed access to medical care after it was revealed that some patients had been waiting months for treatment, allows veterans who live far from VA facilities to get out-of-network care closer to home.
The problem? To be eligible, you have to live 40 miles from the nearest VA facility using "as-the-crow-flies" miles.
<snip>
the Department of Veterans Affairs changed the rule and will now use actual driven miles based on Google Maps rather than "as-the-crow-flies" miles.

The insistence by the VA that veterans be forced to use their facilities is one of the many ways in which that organization prioritizes it's own bureaucracy above the veterans it is intended to serve. Good on Stewart for this.

One area of confusion is that according to the rules, a veteran must be 40 miles away from the nearest VA -- “as the crow flies.” But this can lead to unequal treatment, since residents in areas with winding roads, or simply crowded roads, could face a longer drive than others.
Augustine said about 500,000 should be eligible under the distance requirements, but the "as the crow flies" standard is throwing everything off. He and others are behind legislation that would clarify the rule to accommodate a 40-mile driving distance.
It makes little sense to have veterans only facilities that offer general medical care which is available locally but with less delay and red tape. Why did PPACA not allow for eligible veterans to get 100% federally subsidized exchange policies and do away with all veterans only facilities? It seems that once a gov't program is established that it never goes away.

How on earth did Jon Stewart even know about this?
I betcha I know ... from his favorite whipping boy more than a week before Stewart decided to mention it.
VA program to provide private care stumbling out of the gate | Fox News
So it's really "Kudos to Jon for watching FOX NEWS".
It's not directly attributable to Stewart. I know Stewart is some liberal knight in shining armor the article even points this out:
So a parody news program on the Comedy Channel cable station is making changes in VA policy? That in and of itself is worrying. Perhaps Eddie Murphy or Bill Murray should tweet out what the US needs to do about ISIS so the DoD can make some strategy changes.
However, the change was good by the VA. It makes sense.
It has to sting that the True Patriots at Fox News were too busy complaining about Obama not being circumcised enough to do this. :lol:
I don't know - did it sting? I'd guess MSNBC was too busy complaining about Fox News to do the same - so a round of impotence to everyone!
Jon Stewart also helped push the Congress to stop dicking around with rescue worker's benefits after 9-11. It's no surprise that conservatives want this show pulled off the air ASAP.
I wonder what the feasibility is of using Tricare for veterans instead of the VA health system?
