There were known communists working in the Truman and FDR admins..

there was Alger Hiss and friends

McCarthy was right. But of course, the liberal elite in the "news" business had to squelch any notion that he was onto something so they... as they always do when they can't do much else.. LIED

Considering that McCarthy basically accused everyone in the United States government of being a “commie” the fact that a few of his hysterical claims were correct is not particularly impressive

Hiss was accused in the HUAC committee. McCarthy never served on that committee.

The only thing McCarthy got wrong was underestimating the scope of the problem, thinking that the government had just a few communists and that everything would be fine once they were removed.

In reality, the FDR regime was tantamount to a complete communist takeover of the federal government. The only way to purify it of communism would've been to retire and replace it wholesale. Which is why the government responded with such hostility to McCarthy's (relatively mundane) efforts.

The reason McCarthy is condemned is that while yes there were some Communist sympathizers feeding intel to the Soviets, he went after anyone who ever had any connections, however brief or tenuous, to Socialism or Communism. It became a witch hunt.

And yet, those reckless accusations of his that turned out not to be true and his attempt to turn anti-communism into a partisan weapon drew widespread condemnation from the American public and a censure from the overwhelming majority of the Senate, turned him into a laughing stock and a pariah, and ultimately served to deeply undermine the very anti-communist agenda he worked so hard to promote.

If you believe that there actually were widespread communist agents in the US government, then you must consider McCarthy a fool and an enemy of American capitalism, since his "enemies within" narrative and subsequent disgrace turned out to be a gift to the Soviet Union.
