Washington's unprecedented backing for a UN resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East that singles out Israel has both angered and deeply worried the Jewish state although officials are cagey about openly criticising their biggest ally.
The resolution adopted by the United Nations on Friday calls on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and urges it to open its facilities to inspection.

It also calls for a regional conference in 2012 to advance the goal of a nuclear-free Middle East.

Israel is widely believed to be the only nuclear power in the Middle East, with around 200 warheads, but has maintained a policy of deliberate ambiguity about its capabilities since the mid-1960s.

The document, which singles out Israel but makes no mention of Iran's controversial nuclear programme, drew a furious reaction from the Jewish state who decried it as "deeply flawed and hypocritical."

Can someone PLEASE explain to me the reasoning behind ****ting on Israel? I'm just not getting it here.

I actually support it.
Obama knew very well that such a decision couldn't really hope to effect Israel beyond its political meaning, since Israel is not signed on the NPT and is not bound by its decisions.
He has adapted the decision because he knew that it's a major advancement against Iran, even though it didn't mention Iran at all.
Besides, he has offered his deep apology to Israel for the decision and has stated that he completely opposes the isolation of Israel in the document, and that apology was accepted by the Israeli government.

That being said, the countries that were pushing towards that wording are a bunch of hypocrite countries that were motivated by obvious political agenda.
Israel is the only country that they have mentioned, even though it is known that Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons.

Well that makes as much sense as taking the guns out of the hands of honest citizens, then apologizing to them for not getting the guns from the criminals.

But the document is mainly an advancement against Iran, which justifies the sacrafice of Israel's interests by Obama.

So a Nuke free Middle East means we are shifting on Israel? They have to abide by all rules not just the ones they like to enforce. The world is opening up to the fact that Israel can't play the victim card anymore with this new action that they took against a peaceful flotilla for humanitarian aid that gives people more power to lay suctions against Israel for not obeying the law. A nuke free Middle east means every one also not just ISRAEL, since they can't use them respectably than I say we should take there toys away from them.

lol good luck getting israel to abide. them having nukes is the only reason that the arabs can't invade and the jewish state knows this. They are not about to give up on the only weapon that keeps them alive among a 500 million muslims in the mideast, they don't care what we say, nor should they, being a soverign nation and all.

Note that Israel is the honest citizen, Iran is the criminal....... how can the document be an "advancement against Iran“? Do you think that if Israel gives up their nuclear umbrella Iran will give up their efforts to obtain Nukes?.... Really?

I already said that I think it's a very hypocritical and agenda-motivated wording.
However Israel will not be bound by the decision and has no reason to comply with it, so there wouldn't be a real issue.

Who said it's ****ting on Israel? This new move will create a sound nuclear policy for both the U.S. and Israel. There is no need to have nuclear weapons in that region much less anywhere else in the world. It's time for all nations to take a serious look at nuclear disarmament. It is fair to meantion Israel, the have nuclear weapons... Iran on the other hand, they do not have nuclear weapons right now and the goal is to prevent them from having them in the future.

In an ideal world where everyone wants peace and rainbows, you are so right.

When you find that world, let me know, cause that ain't the one we live in.

We aren't even looking for that kind of world to live in... Every time we discuss these issues political partisanship gets in the way. Take the recent treaty between U.S. and Russia for example. Fox News and the right wing turned it into an Obama bashing fest. Now when we add Israel into the nuclear debate, people act like we are ****ting on Israel just because we want to reassess their nuclear policy.

Obama cannot expect to be heard in the middle east, in an effort to thwart the iranian development of nuclear armaments, if he pretends that it is OK for israel to be armed with nuclear weapons

it also sends a stong signal to tel aviv that it is NOT ok to unilaterally take out the iranian nuclear facilities

israel cannot be found anything short of hypocritical while being a nuclear power which refuses to join the NPT at a time when it also laments that iran may be pursuing nuclear arms as an NPT signatory. the ball is now squarely in israel's court

Did you ever consider that the reason that those of us on the RIGHT find Obama's stance on nuclear weapons is his naive belief that American Nuclear Weapons are a problem to be frightening.

Now he's applying that belief to Israel, that somehow their having nuclear weapons is a problem... It's damned scary watching someone like Obama in action, he has no tally, no clear just how dangerous his actions are.

Israel isn't threating anyone. Iran is.

OH damn those little facts just bursting the Moral Equivalence angle.

Israel has nukes because it's neighbors keep trying to destroy the country.

We can evaluate other nations' policies and work to get an agreement through diplomacy. No one says we are forcing them to do anything.

Say it isn't so!!!!!!!!

I thought Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria were just coming to a neighborhood party in June of 67.... you know, just neighbors stopping by to say hi.

Same for 1973..... just buddies goofing around.

So I'm out numbered 7 to 1 (world Arab population 2010 58 million..... Israel 8 million) and someone wants me to give up my weapons. This is a hard decision..... I'll get back to you in a century or so.

Iran won't give up their efforts, but Arab states might. The real danger is that when Iran DOES get the bomb, many of the Arab states may be tempted to follow suit to protect themselves. If we can get them on board with this now, they may be less likely to do so. And they are unlikely to acquiesce to a nuke-free Middle East if we carve out an exception for Israel.

Almost every other country in the world, including most US allies, has supported a nuke-free Middle East in previous UN resolutions. This isn't exactly a huge radical step.

Tell that to Israel..... out numbered 7 to 1 as they are.
