It appears to be the case. The Ukrainian Duce's superior oratory and persuasive powers; that held the world in trance for months and months following the Russian assault back in February 2022; that rallied Ukrainians to resistance; that garnered international support and maybe saved a rump of Ukraine; appears to be failing him in the case of one man: Trump. The only man that matters. The European Union may fawn on Zelenskyya, they count for naught. With Trump, Z has everything; without Trump, he is just an empty T Shirt.

It's not as if Zelenskyya's task is a difficult one. Donald Trump is an easy man to please. So what is Zelenskyya's problem?

He could just shut up. Anytime he opens his mouth Ukraine takes a hit. Why doesn't he just shut up?

And Ukrainians are beginning to take notice of this messianic and fatalistic deterioration in their Duce. The Ukrainian Duce no more is able to distinguish between Ukraine and his person. Ukraine is him. The Ukraine? But that's myself! In true King Louis XIV spirit

But Ukrainians are beginning to take notice. And are alarmed. A mad man, saddled with a martyrdom complex is at the wheel.

Member of Ukrainian Parliament, Oleksiy Goncharenko screamed on x: THE SITUATION IS SHITTY!

Below is more angst from the hardline Oleksiy Goncharenko "

"The situation is shitty. There is only one question for all my contacts: why does Zelensky come out and comment on something? Couldn't he just keep quiet for a while? Probably, our generalissimo cannot remain silent. It's hard for him. He wants to talk. One more time: Trump reacts very badly to any statements in the liberal media. Very bad. Ukraine, thanks to the "talent" of the greatest leader of our time, has become the topic of an inter-party struggle in the United States. And Zelensky goes crazy every night..."
Can Ukraine really afford Zelenskyya as dictator for life*?

*Zelenskyya's dictatorship is solid. His Parliament extends it every 3 months. That is as long as repoman Putin is still serving eviction notices. This amounts to an unlimited line of credit for Zelenskyya's dictatorship. If Zelenskyya lives to be as old as Fidel Castro, he will be dictator, albeit in three months installments.

But I digress. I always do.

Should Zelenskyya zip it up in the interest of Ukraine?

Putin loves you.

Z is absolutely refusing to discuss any territory. he's still clinging to the adoration Ukr can win this

I would say the biggest liability for Ukraine is Russian troops in their country.

Goncharenko is kidding himself if the thinks placating Trump is going to get them anywhere.
Zelensky is fighting a bully in Putin. So it isnt too bright to piss off the only guy on the planet that can help you defeat that bully.

Z is absolutely refusing to discuss any territory. he's still clinging to the adoration Ukr can win this

More likely, he realizes that his (endless?) term in office will end with the (endless?) state of war.

It takes being a Russian apologist to suggest Zelenskyy is a "liability" for Ukraine, no different than suggesting Ukraine give up and become Russia.

Adoration Ukraine can win this? Zelenskyy is utterly divorced from reality—hallucinating victory over Russia after three years of death, destruction, and continual territorial losses.

Sadly, the insolent little dictator has grown so accustomed to the fawning of Hollywood celebrities and warmongering neocons that he started believing the media’s PR spin. He carries himself as though he’s beyond reproach, acting like the second coming of Winston Churchill. The reality is that he’s suffering from an extreme disconnect from reality and is now attacking the man—and the nation—that serves as his sole lifeline to keep his military fighting.

This petty tyrant needs to get real: stop the slaughter and end this war. If he keeps playing Bohemian Corporal—hiding in his fantasy world—Kyiv will fall just as Berlin did.

Even the US employed Martial Law during its Civil War, as have many nations throughout history.

Why the double standard?

Nuclear weapons and not relying on US funding to continue the (virtual) stalemate.

Putin will not use nuclear weapons. It would lead to his country's destruction.

You want to reward a war criminal because he has the cards.

He does have international law on his side. Should we say the law doesn't have any cards?

When Trump defies a Supreme Court's decision based on the Constitution, will you say the Court doesn't have any cards?

We are headed to a very dark place.

Considering it was widely believed that Russia would take Kiev in a matter of days, he's done a rather masterful job.

Ukraine's Martial Law must be renewed every 6 months (as the Constitution outlines) and the 450 member Parliament must concur with any renewal.

Let's be real here. 20% of Ukraine is currently occupied by the Russian military. Holding elections in such a reality would disenfranchise 20% of Ukraine's voters.

In addition, Russia strikes populated Ukrainian cities every day with deadly missile and drone attacks. Polling places would not be immuine to Putin's barbarism.

The most sensible way forward is for all Russian troops to leave Ukraine... something the OP (a pro-Russia poster) conveniently neglects to mention.

Zelensky has said he would resign if Ukraine could join NATO. That's perfectly reasonable.

Elections will again be held when an end to the war is achieved.

A cease-fire would simply freeze Russian troops in place and still disenfranchise ~20% of Ukrainian voters.

Ukraine presidential terms run for 6 years. Zelenskyy could very well run/win again, and a former Commander of all Ukrainian forces - General Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhnyi - is also very popular with the people.

Zelenskyy did nothing. The little dictator never served in the military and played no part in directing the defense—that was the work of his officers. It was Ukraine’s soldiers—wielding the Javelin anti-tank and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles that President Trump sent—that fought bravely and blunted the invasion.

Meanwhile, Russian conscripts, many ill-prepared and unsure why they’d been sent, often viewed Ukrainians as friends—thanks to shared history—and lacked motivation. Their equipment was chronically neglected; captured photos show Russian missile systems shedding tires from dry-rotted, Chinese-made rubber.

And just like Field Marshal Montgomery at Market Garden—naïvely betting his armor could thunder down one narrow corridor to seize Arnhem—Russian commanders apparently believed a “thunder run” down a single road would take Kyiv as U.S. forces once raced to Baghdad. It was just as ill-fated.

Why the double standard?

There is no “double standard”. I simply stated a fact. If (when?) he trades (20% of Ukraine’s) land for (perhaps about 3 years of) peace then his political power (appeal?) disappears.

Yes, it certainly is reasonable, and it's reasonable for the US to support such a move. Zelensky knows that no other deal struck with Putin can protect the rest of Ukraine from coming under Russian guns and rockets, because Putin has demonstrated time and again that he lies just like Trump does, and breaks treaties like he breaks bread sticks. Absent any scaled up military support from the USA, the only thing that is sure to protect the portion of Ukraine currently unoccupied by Russia is if it were to come directly under the blanket protection of NATO membership. And Putin knows this too!

Despite its enormous size and military might, Russia is actually a relatively poor country, having roughly the same economy as Portugal, and being near totally dependent in trade on its energy alone. It had an opportunity back in 1991 to move into the economic sphere of the developed world, but it fell victim to its own vestigial cold-war hangover instead. If Trump didn't have his head up Putin's ass - or his own - he would support Ukraine's NATO membership. Then he could really claim to have stopped the war.

We are headed to a very dark place.

Law, without adequate enforcement, is likely to be treated as being a mere suggestion.

That explains your double standard.

What cards does the international war criminal you are siding with have?
Russia is gaining ground and punishing Ukr cities with missiles. Ukr is losing ground and only hit a couple cities with drones
Russia is winning the war, albeit at a great cost to both
