THE COLD WITHIN
By James Patrick Kinney (see end note)

Six humans trapped by happenstance
In dark and bitter cold
Each one possessed a stick of wood,
Or so the story's told.

Their dying fire in need of logs,
The first woman held hers back.
For on the faces around the fire,
She noticed one was black.

The next man looking cross the way,
Saw one not of his church,
And couldn't bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.

The third one sat in tattered clothes,
He gave his coat a hitch.
Why should his log be put to use,
To warm the idle rich?

The rich man just sat back and thought
Of the wealth he had in store.
And how to keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.

The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from sight,
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.

The last man of this forlorn group
Did naught except for gain
Giving only to those who gave
Was how he played the game.

The logs held tight in death's still hands
Was proof of human sin.
They didn't die from the cold without,
They died from ---THE COLD WITHIN.

[Ed. Note] There is a discrepancy in the authorship of this poem. The original submitted work stated that the author was: Douglas C. Corlett © 1987. Recently, we received a few notifications saying that the author is: James Patrick Kinney. Since copies of The Cold Within on other web site list both authors, with Kinney having the oldest date, we have listed him as the author.

In rebuttal I humbly submit the following for you.

The poem you sight is clever and the statement loud and clear
I under the message but I see no racism here
Obama is black in truth but he is only half
And when the Liberals talk of him, they always leave out that

There is however prejudice at work here in our Nation
It's in the form of Party lines it shows true segregation
So best we all forget this kick to push our own agendas
And see the king he has no clothes not even cheap suspendas

It's not about your party and it's sure not about one of mine
That means the very most me now but it is our place in time
It's all about our future and the direction we've been headin
It's the bills we're leaving for our kids they'll suffer all the consequences

So let's all resolve this day to turn this ship of state around
Before the Liberal Radicals run it surely on to ground
We really have so little time this we all must remember
Do your duty, vote the bums out when you vote come this November
