Let's face it. Newsom is agitating the people who already wouldn't vote for him in a Presidential run, and may be making headway among independents. After all, the majority of the country supports some abortion rights.
 
God cares so little about abortion he never condemned it once in the bible. Modern American Christians have no idea what the bible says and they lazily label their own personal beliefs as god's opinion in an attempt to give it credibility.

I think it might simply because many people don't like Scripture being bastardized in this way. As the priest said in the cited article, "The most basic level of loving your neighbor as yourself is not killing your neighbor, yet that's exactly what abortion does."

Those that are concerned about scripture being bastardized wouldn't be likely to vote for Newsom in the first place.

Do you think Independent voters are going to worry more about scripture or women's rights?

What I think is that even non believers will be turned off by such a low life move. Most people have respect for religion even when they don’t personally adhere to it. Newsom is no Christian but he is using scripture out of context in the attempt to rally support for killing the unborn. Pretty low IMO.

Taking a popular stance on a social issue in conjunction with using "Love your neighbor as yourself" is not going to turn anyone off.

Abortion does no such thing. There is no "neighbor" or no child/baby in an abortion. What a woman chooses to do is certainly not any business of her "neighbors" either.

I don’t know which version of the Bible you read but abortion is a sin. Newsom attempts to misuse scripture in order to justify sin. And it’s not the first time. And I’m sure you’re going to say that God approves of abortion which tells me you don’t know God no matter what you call yourself.
