Is teaching the history of blacks in this country racist? (1 Viewer)

Get over it. Move on. Stop living in the past.

The only talk there seems to be is not productive at all. It only keep hurt feelings alive.
Stop living in the past?
That is why Conservatives never learn from mistakes.

Yes, because the point is to make the white kids feel like villains and black kids feel like victims.
SO teaching accurate history is racist, but taking out anything that might make white children feel bad is good, really? that is the stupidest thing I have read on this messageborad in a while. History is history and it should be taught as it happened and not some whitewashed version, so some children feel better.

African slave trading existed long before the europeans arrived, and both sides benefited from the slave trade. Sorry, but the "poor african slave trader" excuse doesn't work either.

1) Most Confederate soldiers weren’t wealthy slaveholders. Many fought for home, state loyalty, or simply because their state seceded.

2) Many Union soldiers weren’t initially fighting to end slavery, but to preserve the Union. The emancipation proclamation came in 1863 - two years into the war.

They are facts, and you didn't dispute any of them.
I will dispute the idea that slavery was somehow good or it was okay because it was done before it happened here in this country. And if you knew anything about the economic history of this country, which I do having taken a course in the economic history of the US, then you would know that the buying and selling of slaves became a business in the South and it made blacks into merchandise to be bought and sold like any other item.

So back to the original point, how does stopping talking about racism end racism?

There is very little racism. Racism is a type of hate not unlike others. You cannot end hate. All the talk does is fuel the flames. You make it worse, especially when you see racism where it doesn't exist. Every time you claim it is, where it is not, you piss of lots of people.

If you want to talk about racism, be very careful that you do not slander others. This is the prominent hate of the whites against black. The slander. Stop the slander.

This seems unlikely since talking about race has ended legal racism and caused countless white people to re-examine how they look at black people.

But that's not the point. You still haven't explained how not talking about it ends it, and that was Freeman's claim.

Slavery was included in my schooling, though it was never mentioned that there were some free blacks who owned slaves, or that slavery had existed thousands of years before America was discovered.
LOL, so you never read the Bible or had ancient history taught to you. You actually thought that the first thime slavery came about was in the Americas. Sad. Probably, you were never taught that some black had slaves was because it was so few, it was not worht mentioning. BTW, did learning about slavery make you feel like a villian?

Did you not read the words I wrote?
And no, I wasn't made to feel like a villain or a victim.

It was not uncommon, from what I understand, for the few free blacks who did own slaves as a form of protection.

I do not believe that any country before the US used the invented concept of race as a permanent, hereditary signifier of slave status.

America invented racial slavery.

None of that was mentioned either when I was schooled.

the problem is that racism is not in the past, it is present in this country today. White supremacy groups are not only larger than they have been in many years, but they continue to grow. THose groups are only the part of racism we see, the ugly underbelly of racism in this country is even larger. ANd the real problem is people like you who think it is something in the past.

There's plenty of racism in whites. Like how the majority of you still deny Black Americans socioeconomic justice for the injustice of economic segregation or how your ridiculous soft white culture tries to teach children that slaver Founders were heroes of liberty and freedom.

You believe the teaching of the history of black folks in America makes white kids feel like villains. If you are white, I wonder whether you feel like a villain when you read about Jim Crow and poll tax. I was an actual child at the time we became aware and it just made me want to be a part of doing better. And for my black child friends, it gave them heroes to identify with.

They are telling on themselves and don't even know. If you don't hold similar views why would learning about it make you feel any type of way?
