Over the years, Lee's battle flag, that is the battle flag of northern Virginia, or as it is commonly known, the stars and bars, has been used by racist groups as a symbol. It is commonly flown in the south, which in all honesty is just disrespectful and racist on its face and is often seen on or around confederate monuments.
Some people call this flag, which I refer to as "the traitor flag", a symbol of heritage while others, me included, refer to it as symbol of racism and treason. I suppose there are arguments to be made for both sides; however, I should like to point out that the traitor flag has always been a symbol in the battle for white supremacy. There is evidence of this, such as the following: "Mississippi legislators finally voted to replace their state’s flag, which included what is known as the battle flag of northern Virginia. This was the flag flown by those defending white supremacy..."
The heritage of this flag and what it represents was made abundantly clear by the State of Mississippi in the statement it issued when seceding from the union at the start of the civil war.
“Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the Black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization."
"Confederate heroes and the battle flag they fought under were willing, as John C. Calhoun wrote, “to drench the country in blood” to maintain white supremacy."
Simply put, the use of this flag, which is a symbol of hate, white supremacy, and slavery, as well as treason, and its use or display is completely unacceptable. Claiming it as a sign of "heritage" is only accurate if the "heritage" in question is a heritage of hate, treason, and racism.
Now, we have Trump and his racist goons using this symbol of hate and racism, and they had the gul to do it in the halls of congress.
The racism, hate, and treason continues to this day.
The explicit use of the Confederate flag as a symbol of segregation became more widespread and more violent after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision. Southern states resisting federally mandated integration incorporated the flag into their official symbolism.
It's time to stop glorifying hate, treason, and racism. It's time to stop waving the banner of racist traitors.

“Heritage” or “Hate”? Different people at different times have used the Confederate flag as a symbol of both—and of other things. Trying to reduce the flag to a single meaning distorts its history and ignores the very real influence that history has had on perceptions and meanings.
It's time to stop glorifying hate, treason, and racism. It's time to stop waving the banner of racist traitors.
