Pete Buttigied has continued to rise consistently in the polls and is now on a par on the polls for the Iowa Caucus with Biden, Sanders and Warren.

He does represent youth, intelligence, morals, principles, humanity and centrism, all of which is what the populace wants. If it wasn't for the fact that gayness is still seen as a negative to a large amount of people, I would venture to say he would be the Democratic Nominee and win.

Here is his speech at the Iowa Democratic Liberty and Justice event that occurred yesterday and it establishes him as a force to reckon with. Check out what he says between the 11.15 and 13.20 time frame on this video. Such a statement will resonate strongly with everyone.

Are we ready for a gay man to be president? I do know that if he is the nominee, I will vote for him and not just because he is running against an evil man in Trump but because Buttigieg is totally believable as being presidential and a benefit to our country.

if he's the nominee, he has my vote.

Hmm... might one dare take a look at South Bend, IN to see how he did acting as it's executive? I get it, that "centrists" among the current DNC POTUS hopefuls are few, and that Buttigieg is more "on the ball" than Biden, but other than that he is just a mediocre (at best) mayor looking to get a huge promotion from an "anybody but Trump" demorat (only?) voting base.

I think he's a smart man, I don't care what his does in his personal life, being homosexual is a non-issue to me. I would easily vote for him if he were the nominee.

Yep, but that (bolded above) would likely apply to any of the current 2020 DNC POTUS hopefuls.

Buttigieg is not a centrist. Let this meme die already. :thumbdown

"mediocre at best" is more of an opinion than fact.

Buttigieg: In broad strokes, Buttigieg’s best-known achievement has been turning around the down-on-its-luck city of South Bend. He invested $25 million in redesigning the city’s streets to be “smarter”: adding roundabouts, changing one-ways into two-ways, and building pedestrian-friendly sidewalks to make the downtown more attractive. To beautify the city, fight crime, and find more room for affordable development, Buttigieg vowed to clear 1,000 vacant homes in the city in his first 1,000 days in office. He delivered, and then some, demolishing 60 percent of the 1,122 properties slated for revitalization, and rehabbing the others. Based on these efforts, he’s credited with attracting an estimated $90 million in downtown investment.

Buttigieg’s other biggest push was preparing South Bend for the proverbial “future of work,” and using data to transform the city into a “Silicon Prairie.” He attracted new startups, launched a resource center for minority entrepreneurs, and is piloting a “Lifelong Learning system,” funded by the charitable arms of Google and Walmart and run by the Drucker Institute (though it hasn’t yet started accepting students). On the site of the old Studebaker auto manufacturing plant, he helped develop the burgeoning technology hub, Ignition Park.

There is only so much that can be done as a mayor and what he has done is decent.

He did more as a mayor than Trump has done as a president. In addition, Trump had never done anything in public office before he became president and you voted for him.

He is more of a centrist than Warren and Sanders and that makes him more electable to Republican-against-Trump voters.

If it wasn't for the fact that gayness is still seen as a negative to a large amount of people,

The most homophobic groups in the US are blacks and Hispanics, who overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

Didn't resonate with me. The usual dumb crap about climate change. Politically impossible promises about healthcare. Pandering to public unions. On top of that, all his "change" talk makes him sound like Obama in 08.

I think that applies to President Trump also. I see no Democrat candidate that makes me want to rip off my Trump bumper sticker.

At this point anyone keeping the federal budget below $7 trillion/year is going to be considered a centrist.

I agree that I was stating my opinion, which you may find to be a common activity here on DP. A citation is required for that (bolded above) assertion. Lacking such a citation, you are expressing an opinion (SWAG?) as well. Having your own POTUS preference and (extreme?) political bias is fine but assigning one to others is not.

Only if Trump faced a primary challenge, otherwise one could simply be voting for the devil they know rather than the devil they don't know. ;)

My point was more that many (like Obama?) seem to be hesitant to choose to (admit?) support any DNC POTUS hopeful in the primary and are simply going to vote for the "D" (regardless of name) candidate in the general. It's much like folks now taking the "not Trump's" issue position even if that was their "pre-Trump" issue position.

On what basis do you consider Pete Buttigieg a "centrist", Luckyone? Because other than his penchant for seductive obscurity and his even-keeled tone, the majority of the man's political positions are squarely left-wing and he believes that the Federal government should be used as the primary tool to effectuate the changes he deems necessary to better the country.

Nobody cares that PB is gay.

What they care about is his policies.

He's unelectable given what they are.

1. NO, "we" are not ready yet.

a. He probably alienated too many people when he openly showed affection to his husband.
b. He also probably alienated too many people when he openly blamed "racism" for certain unpleasant situations.

2. A gay candidate will have to wait until after a woman of color is elected president.

a. By then, however, the United States of America may become more socially conservative than it is today. Many new Americans are against gay rights, and they will soon be the new majority. So quite possibly, an openly gay person will never be elected president.

Buttigieg is punching way above his weight. I'm very impressed with what a little-known mayor from South Bend, IN has been able to accomplish so far. This guy has a very impressive intellect and he is going to be a force to reckon with for a long time. If Bernie Sanders wasn't in the race, he might be my top choice.

Among the "centrist" Democrats, Buttigieg is clearly the most impressive.

That's not what you said earlier. This is what you said:

You didn't just say he was more centrist here. You implied that he was a centrist. Learn the difference.

He could possibly do what Obama did. If that happens and he is elected I hope people try really hard to say his name right. It only takes a few minutes to think, see it, and say it properly.

I'll take mediocre over incompetence any day...

Obama was a long shot and ended up winning because of his ability to resonate with the people, much like Buttigieg is doing.

Sorry, I did assume. Did you vote for Trump in 2016? Will you vote for Trump in 2020?

If nothing else, he is more of a centrist on health care as he is not for Medicare for all unless it is chosen by the person itself. Medicare for all is the main bone of contention between Republicans and Democrats. Biden is a centrist and both he and Buttigieg are plying the same program.

Thanks for pointing out such an insignificant detail. If you were only that detailed with Trump.

Here's RCP's averages on Iowa.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2020 - Iowa Democratic Presidential Caucus

I said numerous times I'd prefer a fresh young face instead of these tired out old foggies. If from flyover country, so much the better. Buttigieg fits that bill. His gayness doesn't bother me one bit. Now Buttigieg is 12-15 points behind each of the top three, but a win in Iowa could change that. He is in a solid 4th position as of today.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2020 - New Hampshire Democratic Presidential Primary

But he is still way behind in Nevada and South Carolina.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2020 - Nevada Democratic Presidential Caucus

RealClearPolitics - Election 2020 - South Carolina Democratic Presidential Primary

The four primaries/caucuses prior to Super Tuesday. But a win in Iowa could be dynamic propelling him to bigger and better things. Time will tell.
