Indiana Democrats flee state legislature to avoid anti-union vote -- like Wisconsin counterparts
By Emi Kolawole
Indiana Democratic lawmakers are following the lead of their Wisconsin counterparts by leaving the legislature -- and their state -- to avoid a vote on anti-union legislation. Like the Wisconsin legislators, they're going to Illinois.
the Post's Greg Sargent reports all but two of the legislature's Democrats are leaving and heading to Illinois, setting the stage for a state government shutdown. The party needed to keep two Democrats in the state in order to make any necessary motions and block Republicans from moving the legislation through in the absence of a quorum.

I think I know what Dems across the country are going to be known for this year. The campaign ads just write themselves don't they?

Yeah, they get to take the day off at tax payers expense, bravo Dems. :roll:bravo indiana democrats!!!
When it comes time to take up the new budget in Washington, will the Democrats flee to Canada???
Out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference between this and a filibuster? One side is using procedural rules to stop legislation and the other side is using procedural rules to stop legislation...

No, instead of doing the job they were elected to do, they're playing hide and go seek like a bunch ****ing babies. GOP will use the big time, you watch. Of course, hardcore partisan shills such as yourself will support them no matter what they do, but that 70% in the middle are not going to be impressed. Finally rebelling against idiotic neoconservative policies across your nation?
At least the GOP showed up to work. This make Dems look like cowards.Out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference between this and a filibuster? One side is using procedural rules to stop legislation and the other side is using procedural rules to stop legislation...

A group of 51 Democrats from the Texas House of Representatives fled to a hotel in Ardmore, Oklahoma, evading state police sent to bring them back to Austin and preventing a quorum in the GOP-run House.
Republicans mocked the fleeing lawmakers as the "Chicken Ds" and printed playing cards with their pictures on them -- much like the cards U.S. troops in Iraq have been issued to help identify fugitive Iraqi leaders.:lamo
But they drew support from famed Texas singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, who sent a batch of his trademark red bandannas to their hotel Wednesday night along with the message, "Stand your ground.":lamo
Craddick, R-Midland, said the walkout has killed more than 400 House bills and could cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars, and damaged the state's reputation.
"We're on the late-night talk shows and things like that, and I think that that harms the image of the state overall," he said.
Dems did the same thing in Texas in 2003. They lost 5 seats in 2004

Why don't they stay and fight for what they believe?
It's because they are wrong and they can't justify what they do stand for.
Knowing they're going to lose is not a good reason to not show up to work.Read the rules that govern the state legislatures in question and you can answer your own question with the facts.
For this reason alone, I find it hard to believe people are cheering them on. Do those people actually enjoy tax dollars just going by the wayside? What if either party did this nonstop or whenever they felt like it? Seems childish and at minimum, a theft of taxpayer dollars.

I don't really see how this is any different than filibustering in the us senate.
If these democrats "fought for what they believed" and let the vote go, they'd lose, much like any party with less than 50 seats in the senate that filibusters.
