One word: flamethrower. Never mind, a few words: flamethrower, molotovs, shotguns with phosphorus- or magnesium-filled shells. Hell, Greek fire and catapults and walls with boiling oil on top would work just fine.

An AK-47 levels the playing field.
Good job Etheral, you just joined Tucker in the Zombie Horde. A browning machine gun (much less any machine gun) is used against normal targets for mostly body shots which work against normal targets. Remember that body shots don't stop zombies, only head shots. Furthermore, when that barrel over heats, you're screwed.
A head won't do a zombie much good when it doesn't have a body.
I have spare barrels too...
One machine gun can't eliminate thousands of zombies.
But you have to replace them. Simple law of large numbers dictates that the time you spend replacing barrels reduces the distance between you and them. As Zombie hordes often number into the hundreds of thousands, you will eventually lose this fight and join the undead.
This really is a trick question. The best tool is a melee weapon.

Zombies, eh? Give me one of these...
With about 10,000 of these...
And I'll be one happy camper indeed.
I chose "hunting large game", not because it is quicker or easier, but because chicks would probably be really impressed by that.
Your pistol is so you can fight your way back to your carbine.
A melee weapon? You think your arms will hold up long enough to decapitate 1000 Zombies?
Many times more than one swing would be required...decapitation isn't easy.
I think the MG pictured is a .30 cal. A .50 cal would be better, because body shots would disable the zombies...a .50 BMG can and often does cut a human body completely in half due to massive hydrostatic shock. A zombie in two pieces isn't that much of a threat, even if he is still twitching.
Switching barrels isn't as much of a problem as no longer being able to raise your sword/axe/chainsaw/cricket-bat because your arms are so exhausted they won't move.
(I can't believe I'm having this conversation :mrgreen
G.
Nope. You get a long pole with sharp blades attached to it. Thus, allowing you to slice heads without having to raise your arms. ...You don't necessary need to decapitate. Just through the skull would work, or enough impact damage to damage the brain. Also remember that Zombie flesh is much more suspect to blows.
Before someone says "chainsaw": I once ran one of those for a living; it is also very tiring to the arms, and if I had a dollar for every time a chainsaw crapped out on me in the middle of a job...
