As a lifelong progressive, I've always seen it as my duty to stand up for immigrants. No matter their country of origin, whatever their race or religion, I have always believed that if we welcome them into our country with love in our hearts, then they will love us in return.

I was mistaken.

The vast majority of immigrants to America come from underdeveloped, socially conservative countries. When they arrive in the US, they place further strain on our overburdened social services. They drive up the cost of housing, which is already unaffordable to many Americans.

But worse than this, they are a clear threat to the future of progressivism. These people do not share our values. They don't care about things like LGBT rights or women's equality. They are social conservatives. They'll take our support and then stab us in the back on election day. We are fools to keep protecting them.

It is on this basis that I urge all my fellow progressives to either throw their weight behind Trump's deportation plan, or at the very least, stand aside and let it proceed unhindered. We have a unique opportunity to rid the country of a large number of potential future conservative voters, and we won't even need to lift a finger. Trump will do it for us.

I don't think many democrats support illegals. Deportations of illegals is fine with me. Under Trump, I wonder if this turns into more than just illegals that get deported though. Biden/Harris had their chance though and apparently blew it.

Spoken like a twisted conservative/trumper........................for shame , America belongs to ALL

Quick, simple solutions are NEVER answers to human problems like this.........................unless you are lazy and irresponsible.....

I support open borders and an easy pathway to citizenship. Good for the economy and morally right thing to do. Hell it's what the experiment of America was. Opposing immigration is anti-american.

I think you're confused here. Latinos still vote majority Democrat. In this election, we lost some but that's mostly due to the economy.

It's funny since Musk and others think that Dems are letting migrants in to guarantee liberal votes but you're worried we're letting in conservative voters.

If you could convince Republicans that these are conservative votes then they would welcome them in and give them full citizenship in a heartbeat.

I'm sort of astonished that you actually typed that out and posted it without thinking through what you were saying.

"Loving America" is not the same as "Shares my values on questions of human sexuality", and this is.... the reasoning you present here is just blatantly what the angriest versions of the right wing have claimed were the secret left wing motivations all along (to import a demographic victory, since their policies were unpopular with Americans already here).

This was shameful, @Irredentist. Neither you, nor the Democrat Party, nor the Progressive Movement "Own" immigrants, and throwing a fit when they don't do what you told them to is wrong, as is choosing to support deportation not for purposes of re-establishing law, but for revenge. :( You aren't going to deport the people who can vote - you are going to deport their family members who are here illegally.

Because they didn't vote in lockstep for your preferred candidate.

In one election.

Glad to see @tshade call this out. It needs to come from the Left - from the Right, it'll just trigger tribal defenses.

Unfortunately, Trump just hired the child separation guy to do the deed. I'll bet good money it's going to be messy, cruel, ugly and probably illegal. I can't support that.

Immigrants are cool - unless they're conservative.

What do deportations have to do with immigrants?

Perhaps the greatest irony of this OP is that I never thought I'd see the day when a self-described liberal/progressive would whip out the backstab myth.

Deporting is not the answer. Prosecuting those who hire illegals is the answer. Instead of chasing down every barefoot peasant and tossing them back over the fence, give one or two each day a path to legal status. All they have to do is report when someone hires them. Then, prosecute that person and anyone whom they implicate. The jobs will dry up fast and the reason for the influx of illegals will go away with them.

Trumps cries "They're taking your jobs!" while he should be saying "They're hiring your competition! We must stop them from hiring illegals!"

Throw the farmers and the factory managers in prison. The flow of illegals will stop.

I support open borders and an easy pathway to citizenship. Good for the economy and morally right thing to do. Hell it's what the experiment of America was. Opposing immigration is anti-american.

The trick there becomes the cost.

You can have open borders and an easy pathway to citizenship.

And you can have a public welfare system.

You just can't have both.

I have yet to see someone who champions the former acknowledge that it means we need to severely curtail if not get rid of the latter :(

The Great Replacement Theory has found a new home in the left.

I just...

Yeah, out of words.

Trump/MAGA really has shocked our senses as a society.

The driver of immigration from the elite perspective isn't a moral one -- it's in the interest of capital. It drains foreign nations of their talent while simultaneously greatly increasing competition and depressing wages of people in the host nation.

What MAGA gets wrong is the angle. The problem isn't technically illegals, at least not for the average American. The immigration that is going to be most harmful is legal white collar immigration. Illegal immigrants are bound, basically by law, to be a permanent slave underclass. They're not really working high value jobs and increasingly the jobs that they do perform are going to be automated.

What should be more concerning is technocrats like Musk lobbying for oodles of immigration from countries like India for the tech sector. Not only do these immigrants take extremely high value jobs, but they also bring with them a caste mentality and ethnic nepotism that is completely incompatible with Western liberalism and meritocratic Republicanism. A high functioning but highly nepotistic demographic is capable of infiltrating elite institutions and that's extremely concerning. Illegals from the global south that are bound by law to be a permanent slave class are concerning for obvious reasons, but they aren't really a "threat" to the average American.

I see said the blind man. If they were more liberal than conservative they'd be worth saving and providing a living. But since many or most are conservative we need to get rid of the scum infecting out society.

As Chris Matthews said (notably after the election) the exiting administration foolishly let all these people in who do nothing for democrats and piss off some of the people democrats need to win elections.

To become relevant again liberals need to abandon illegal immigrants. Legal immigration is a benefit to the country they should work on streamlining the process and double the amount of immigrant and agree to build a fence and secure the border.

Move away from identity politics. Lumping everyone into discrete packets only creates divisions. Start thinking of people who live here as Americans regardless of color, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Get rid of the pronouns that doesn't do anything for anyone. Liberal democrats need to reverse course and agree that former males can't compete in women's sports. I know that will set some peoples hair on fire but there comes a time you have to kick the crutch out from under Tiny Tim.

Shun or get rid of any lefties who still cling to the notion that defunding the police is a good idea. Carver says the stupidest words in English are 'Defund the Police'.

Adopt an America first attitude. It will go along way to making the party relevant again.

Trump also said he wanted to deport the LEGAL Haitian immigrants in Ohio that he falsely claimed were stealing and eating people’s pets.

They cannot vote...how did they stab any of us in the back?

Capable of infiltrating elite institutions, yes, but that doesn't change the prevailing social dynamics. Their ability to infiltrate and influence these institutions is contingent upon their ability to fit in and not become the subject of scorn and racial animus.

My wife came from the third world country of Germany with a university degree.
She had to show proof of half a dozen vaccinations plus proof that we knew each other… photos, letters, emails, etc. before she could get a green card.
And you want to give special privilege to illegal immigrants. They’re illegal, FFS. They broke the law.
They already have diplomatic immunity in sanctuary cities like San Francisco where they can literally get away with murder.

It's not a myth. Immigrants from conservative countries stay conservative when they get here. They can't be relied upon to promote progressive causes, ergo we should neither permit their arrival nor shield their presence here.

The "prevailing social dynamics" are determined by the elite institutions. Everything flows downstream from that.

If I understand correctly, what you're implying here is only relevant if the the elite factions are totally stagnant and unchanging but we know that isn't the case. Contrary to the liberal orthodox opinion, western WASP types tend to be far less racist/nepotistic and far more altruistic than first generation immigrants from somewhere like India. Over time this has consequences.

Why do you think MAGA Jesus is president now?

Who put him in office?

More importantly, what do you think they expect from him once he takes office?

ETA: I do think we will continue to have large numbers of highly-skilled immigrants coming into the country because we will need them until we can churn out enough home-grown graduates with the kinds of skills we need to compete with the likes of China and India. That'll take a while. But I expect that their strategy for survival and advancement in the US of A will be the same as it's always been: assimilate.

You are living in Portugal...your wife doesn't have just a green card if she is living in Portugal.

Why should the left wing continue to support policies that engineer our own destruction? Support for immigration has been a failure. Therefore, we should throw our support behind deportations instead.

We’re on vacation here. We live in Alaska.
Interesting that the Portuguese flag showed up.
