IFC statement on the release of detainees

The Iraqi police released the five detainees this afternoon who have been arrested by US forces the evening of June 7 (Mohamed Karim, Ali Hussein Mohamed Mahmoud, Hussam Salim and Abdul Amir Saleh. Samir Adil was leading the receptionists along with Said Nima, Subhi Al-Badri, Abdel Hadi Alfatlawi and Jassim Alwan members of IFC Executive bureau. They were released following the global campaign launched by IFC supporters against the US administration who staged demonstrations in front of the US embassies in a number of European countries. Also countless number of protest letters were sent by organizations, political figures and labor unions in the world.

The detainees said that a number of them had been beaten and threatened by the Iraqi police at the sight of US forces. They also stated that US forces had surrounded the central headquarter, while Iraqi police had searched the headquarters, hit and insulted guards of the head office.

At the same time, the US forces tore apart the banners and slogans of IFC that were placed in areas surrounding the head office. One week after the arrest and investigation in the US base located in Rustumiyyah in Baghdad, the detainees were relocated to the police station located.

An IFC spokesman said, "in a joint operation the Iraqi police and US forces stormed the head office of IFC on ground of reports rose by members of the Iraqi police belong to Al-Mahdi Army. The Iraqi police reported to the American forces that IFC is a terrorist organization who is opposing the occupation. These reports came as a result of that Al-Mahdi army tried to open offices in the district located in Al-Askary neighborhood but IFC safety Force confronted them and prevented them from establishing their office in the area to prevent ethnic and sectarian fighting". He also added that "IFC was able to win the release of the detainees by waging a political campaign both locally and globally, as well as a judicial battle, filed a lawsuit on the US agents who raided the head office without judicial authorization and issuance of a warrant of arrest. It is noteworthy that the Sana TV will air interviews regarding the raid and the consequences.

For those of you that don't know what the Iraq Freedom Congress is, it is a secular organization composed of trade unions, political organizations and civil rights organizations dedicated to opposing the fundamentalist "resistance" while also opposing the oppressive occupation of Iraq by coalition forces and promoting a secular, democratic and independent Iraq. They don't commit "terrorism"; in fact, they have trained and deployed safety forces composed of civilian volunteers to patrol the streets of districts of Baghdad and other cities in order to prevent terrorist acts from taking place and to protect the civilian population. What exactly is so compelling about this story?

US forces "raided" and tore up the offices of the IFC for essentially no reason. Detainees being beaten and threatened by Iraqi police in the presence of US forces. Seems pretty serious to me.

If I was there I would be in a better position to know whether members of the group were really helping conspire against the government or not.

And unless you have local contacts which provide recent info of their activities you can only assume they were innocent. The Iraqi Police had reason to believe they were guilty and the Americans assisted the Iraqi authorities with the arrest.

US forces "raided" and tore up the offices of the IFC for essentially no reason.

And by "essentially no reason," you mean they were told by multiple sources that the group was engaging in terrorist activity, right?

After this, the people were detained, questioned for a short time, and released after it was determined that they were no harm. Sounds pretty textbook to me, and well handled.

Detainees being beaten and threatened by Iraqi police in the presence of US forces. Seems pretty serious to me.

Wait, you mean that someone from an organization dedicated to forcing the US out of Iraq would claim that our troops did something wrong (not even them personally, but rather allowed the Iraqi police to do it)? Absolutely shocking. Unless there's evidence of it, I don't put much stock in what they claim.
