I don't think they will be or should be at all motivated by the date of this year's election. They have an extremely important question before them, with massive long-term ramifications, and their goal should not have anything to do with an upcoming election date.If they stall their decision until June, it will still be way too late because that trial won't begin until after the election anyway.
As far as timing and an election - that has far more to do with Smith and even with the trial court and the sweeping decision they reached, which is why this issue is now before SCOTUS.
