Where I work, a number of people openly congratulate folks that get engaged and married, and this brings to mind an interesting question. Since homosexual marriage is such a hot-button for many folks, how would you react if a gay co-worker or friend decided to tie the knot?

Would you congratulate them? Or would you refuse to acknowledge it, or express your opinion that their marriage is "wrong"? Or perhaps you'd just ignore the whole announcement and carry on as if they said nothing?

Not really looking for a flame war, but I am very interested in hearing opinions.

I would congratulate depending on the people.Some people just cant do monogamy gay or straight when some people get engaged i know they suit each other but at other times i know they are heading for disaster.Regardless of which is which i clap along because its not my place to say.

Im not against gay people at all but im just saying some marriages are headed for disaster.

I would do the same thing that I would do if it was a heterosexual couple. Not say anything and work unless they bring it up to me. Then, I would wish them best of luck and hope they live happily.

Seeing how I am against gay marriages/civil unions(and any other paper coated term for marriage that phonies use so they can say they do not support gay marriage)I would have to say no I wouldn't congratulate them.Why would I congratulate someone who is doing something I am against?

Does code pink and other nutters like them congratulate everyone who joins the marines,army or any other branch of the military when they clearly oppose military recruitment?

Would the abortionist congratulate someone who started a anti-abortion group?

Would the pro-illegals congratulate a state that enacted tough illegal immigration laws?

I think I would, yes. I would be happy that they were happy, and keep my opinions to myself and not ruin their day. It would be impolite and disrespectful to lecture them or snub them. If it's legal, it's legal. ^^

No, I know how that looked, but I mean it, I'd be happy for them. It wouldn't be my place, and I would not want them to feel bad.

edit: I would also like to add that if I caught any of my suboordinates disparaging them or denigrating them in any way, there would be an immediate opening at our firm.

Well considering NONE of the groups you mentioned are friends with each other or even co-workers then all your analogies are epic failures.

Already happened at my job several months ago...NJ allows civil unions. I congratulated both of them, since they are both friends of mine.
