What if we had...

1. A poetry slam?
2. A locked, members-only area for posting our short fiction works-in-progress for critique?
3. An assigned "topic of the week" to write a 200-500 word short piece about?
4. Literary Trivia games (where we post a quote from a novel and others guess who wrote it, etc)?
5. Word games?
6. A game where one of us posts the first 3 sentences of a book they're reading, and another member posts the last three sentences of a book they're reading, and then we have to write the middle to make the two excerpts go together?
7. An ongoing (either comic or not) communal "story" that we take turns writing?
Like one member writes an opening paragraph, and then another member writes the next paragraph, and then another (I suspect it would end up being silly/ comical).
8. Discussions of favorite writers, both classical and contemporary; their lives, influences, etc?

9. other ideas?

Here's another one:

A DP Book Club.
Once a month, we all (all interested participants) get the same book, read, and discuss it.

I would like to sponsor some members-only contests to win various prizes. I do this at other sites, and I enjoy giving stuff away. I approached vaughn last year with this idea, which he reacted positvely to. Perhaps I should dust off the idea and try again, eh?

Ooh, me too! Hooray! I've got all kinds of stuff to give away!
We don't need official sponsorship. Let's just do 'er to 'er.
We could have an essay contest about a predesignated topic, or a poetry contest. A short story contest.
I'll take a picture of my bookshelf, and the winner can have any one of my books!
This will be fun. :)

I like most of these ideas. Would you like them presented to vauge?

Duly noted. Thanks for your honesty.

I like number 6 & 7:

I like that and if they don't like anything you got, I'll give them one of mine, or maybe I can give one to the 2nd place winner. I've got some books I'd like to get rid of (for free of course) so maybe another idea might be a book swap type of thing.

What if we had...

1. A poetry slam?

I wouldn't really do this as much because Peotry ain't my thing. I can make up a limerick about pretty much anything, though. :2razz:

2. A locked, members-only area for posting our short fiction works-in-progress for critique?

The risk for someone stealing stuff would be high. I'd say something like this should be invite only with someone very trusted as the mod. I would probably post some of the humorous fiction I've been working on, though, if I trusted all of the people involved and the moderator of that forum.

This one appeals to me if the situation were right.

3. An assigned "topic of the week" to write a 200-500 word short piece about?

I'd do this.

4. Literary Trivia games (where we post a quote from a novel and others guess who wrote it, etc)?

That would probably get boring because people would cheat.

5. Word games?

That sounds fun.

6. A game where one of us posts the first 3 sentences of a book they're reading, and another member posts the last three sentences of a book they're reading, and then we have to write the middle to make the two excerpts go together?

That sounds fun. We could have multiple people take on the same opening and closing lines then make it a competition who had the best story.

7. An ongoing (either comic or not) communal "story" that we take turns writing?

If I were involved it would definitely get silly/comical. And I would definitely get involved.

8. Discussions of favorite writers, both classical and contemporary; their lives, influences, etc?

I probably wouldn't do too much on this one.

Overall, I'd love to see it happen. I'm interested in much of the stuff you propose.

I would be so on top of a book club. That would be hella great. Would it be solely current affairs books?

No, I thought fiction.
Although, of course, it could be whatever.
We could take suggestions and vote on which books.

How about a smack-off? We pit two members against one another in a smack-duel to the death! For instance...

Me vs Me.

Topic: Intellect...or lack thereof.

Me: Listen, Me, I find your distinct lack of intellect to be rib-splittingly comical. You couldn't debate your way out of a wet paper bag you simian mouth-breather! You'd have a better chance of making a cogent point if you randomly smashed your keyboard. Over 1,800 posts and still not a single worthwhile contribution. You sicken me!

Me: Oh! Oh really!? You think so, huh, Me? Well let me tell you something Mr. know-it-all! Your brain is so tiny they had to use exponential notation to measure it in grams! Your idea of an effective rebuttal is bringing a tire iron to bar fight, you Neanderthal! What kind of name is Ethereal anyway? Sounds like an STD or something you stupid sh*t!!!

I love the idea of a book club...reading a book once a month and discussing it. I also like the essay topic idea you had, too.

I think they're all good ideas--and I submit that Ten should be in charge of the Book Nook as Librarian and Official Master of Ceremonies (for such things as the Poetry Slam). She can put that wit and disarming charm and venom to good use in a forum where one can only speak above a whisper if...

...Mistress Librarian permits it.

Wow. That's... an interesting idea.

But, no... I'm sure Vauge would never go for it.
It would probably be more excitement than this forum could stand.

You said you want to make the forum more "fun..."

Besides, it would keep you occupied and out of trouble--wouldn't it?

Many of these ideas sound great. Whatever y'all want to do with them, feel free to do.

This is a really good idea !! I'd participate too :)

I think everybody should post naked to make the forum more fun:mrgreen:

If they ever make me the official Librarian, I promise a members-only Naked Reading Room and a "Penthouse Letters" creative erotic fiction section.
