After driving three hours north from their home in Sturgis, Mississippi, Savannah said her husband was confronted by ICE agents who took him into custody and explained there was a paperwork error dating back to 2015. He was then taken to an ICE detention facility in rural Jena, Louisiana, where he remains today."

Other than to burnish their credentials as an equal opportunity gestapo, why would ICE do this?

That’s truly messed up. I hope he has a very good immigration lawyer and the time to utilize their services.

I also feel for these ICE enforcers IF they are years into a career and a pension having to live with this stuff. I’d not be able to do it.

It’s tough being in your late 30’s to mid 40’s, 10+years into a life long career you’ve based your entire life plan around to start over.

I know, I lived it. I am very glad I wasn’t presented with a conflict of personal interest vs personal ethics on this level.

The vast majority of law enforcement are regular, decent, folks just trying to get from Point A to Point B. Just like everyone else. Trying to earn a decent living to take care of themselves and their families. Some of us were also civic minded. The job was a vocation, not just a paycheck.

I asked the AI, and it pointed me to this article saying he thinks he failed to file an I-751 form, converting a 2-year conditional green card to a 10-year green card. But if that was 10 years ago, what was he using for paperwork to work since then?

To be clear, I think American citizens with foreign spouses should be entitled to have them in the country without forms and deadlines, apart from a marriage certificate. That's the sort of thing "family values" ought to mean.

I had two acquaintances who were Immigration enforcement attorneys for Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), before Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Both expressed concern about the shift in focus when it became ICE. The name change explains a lot. Both stayed on, but I've lost track of them. I assume they're both retired by now, as both were older than me. It would make an interesting conversation.

Personally, I think ICE should be abolished and we should revert to INS. Especially as the agency is involved in overtly unconstitutional/illegal activity. They're the biggest problem in the US right now, and Trump is using the agency as his Gestapo.

There is much of DoJ that’s being weaponized. Trump isn’t the only one who’s fine it, but is the worst offender.

I much preferred the post Nixon period where it was hands off government agencies. A period of a depoliticized bureaucratic agency. It didn’t last. It never totally goes away and there are periods it’s much worse. Now would be one of those periods.

The INS did not become ICE. It sounds like they did a poor job of explaining things to you. The INS was composed of the Programs and Field Operations Divisions. Programs did interior enforcement and adjudicated petitions for immigration, work authorization, adjustments of status, etc. Field Operations did border enforcement, both at ports of entry (immigration inspectors) and between them (Border Patrol). ICE is performing the enforcement functions formerly conducted by the Programs Division of INS, along with the enforcement functions formerly conducted by investigators of the US Customs Service. US Citizenship and Immigration Services has taken over the adjudicating part. The Field Operations functions are now done by US Customs and Border Protection, which is itself split into Border Patrol, Office of Field Operations, and Air and Marine Operations.
