I went to the Naval Academy to defend freedom, not to dismantle it (1 Viewer)

Under the UCMJ any order that a soldier receives that are: Unconstitutional, criminal in nature, or against the law along with others, that solider doesn't have to obey those orders. For example, if an officer orders a solider to torture an enemy captive to gain information that is an illegal order. Most all soldiers understand the rules of engagement and what they can and can not do.
In the USA and in the Western democracies the individual member of any armed force is empowered to refuse an order the individual of any service determines to be illegal or unconstitutional. Yet the Officers and NCO's above the individual who is at the bottom of the military pyramid know well what is an illegal order and to only issue orders that are legal and Constitutional.

Officers and NCOs are well versed in the laws of war both international and national. Officers and NCOs know the USA laws of war and they know the Constitution to which they take their respective oath. Officers and NCOs have the civilian and military education, training and expertise to know never to give an order that is -- or may actually be -- an illegal order that violates the laws of war to include to order an action that would be a crime against humanity.

So as we've seen with the Bloodthirsty Generalissimo Trump -- and with Putin -- it is the elected civilian chiefs who are the menace when it comes to violating the laws of war and whose policy and doctrines are crimes against humanity. The USA armed forces up and down the ranks across all the military services reject this. Just as the abuse of USA military officers in your post is rejected as virtually impossible. You need better examples concerning US military officers of which there aren't any.

Captain Jon Duffy is a retired Naval officer. His 30-year career included the command of two warships and a squadron of destroyers, as well as policy positions in the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill, and on the National Security Council in the White House.

Autocracies don't want their military officers to think and reason, only to blindly follow orders. This closed-minded modus operandi has served to decimate the Russian military in Ukraine.
Who do you think soldiers are, District judges?

In Vietnam Lt. Calley who was responsible for the My Lai massacre which killed 504 civilians was not acting on the behalf of President Johnson when he comitted these murders. Lt. Calley knowingly took it upon himself to commit this crime and he knew it was against UCMJ.
