At 72 years of age and a life long republican unless I did not believe in a candidate I am a sworn democrat/libertarian for one reason. The number of republicans living in fear of Trump to the point of trying to destroy the vote in America. Honestly, I never thought I would live to see any party fight to destroy our right to vote. I voted straight democrat this past election and sent money to the dems only because of my disdain for the PIG Trump. I will in future days do everything in my power to reduce the chances of any and all republicans to win/hold any office in America. I know I am not the only one that has switched parties because of the current tyrant in office.

I feel your pain. I'm a little younger (58) and voted straight Republican since 1980. In 2016 I voted for all the Republicans on my ballot except Trump - I voted for Johnson. In 2020 I voted for all the Democrats except my governor, Chris Sununu.

I will never support the Republicans again until they get rid of the shit in the party (McConnell, Graham. Cruz, et al) and publicly reject Trump.

They drove me to the Democrats after 40 years of supporting them.

I changed to Independent. For me neither the Republican or Democratic Party fits my views. I also was a life long Republican.

Interesting the your have gone democrat/libertarian yet your political leaning is "conservative". Wonder how that will fit it down the road for you.

You are a rarity.

Some I know won't believe this, but this year was the first time I ever voted straight ticket and it was straight Democratic ticket. I believe strongly in having a balanced government (I would prefer to have moderates to begin with though). To try to achieve this, for years I voted for Republicans, Democrats and some Independents or other Parties, but I couldn't do it this year in protest to Trump and those Republicans supporting him. I far too often heard those Republicans advertising in my state say "I stand with Trump", which meant I could not support them.

I have never been a member of any Party though and plan to keep it that way. I honestly hope that the Republicans can turn from Trump politics and politicians, and realize that such political views, ideals do not help our country. I feel the same way about Democrats becoming like AOC (she's not my favorite but there are a few others too), going with more moderate Dems instead (I like Buttigieg and Biden fits me better than someone like Sanders).

Huh?

So, you have a problem with Trump boldly attacking the 2020 election, but was fine with his routine attack for years on democratic institutions; and the GOP's almost 14-year assault on American democracy from select poll closures, to racial gerrymandering, inappropriate voter list purging, and actual election fraud in Ohio, Kansas, and North Carolina? The documentation, as high as the Supreme Court, is plentiful.

The problem with the GOP is not just Trump. He was only ever just a symptom of the rot. I mean, how hard was it really for most of the GOP to shun "rinos" for their wish to preserve conservatism?

Echo. Was Trump not a Democrat before he decided to flip to Republican.

The odd part to your Post indicates disdain for Trump which I respect and to you its warranted.

But why imply your move from a political party. What I mean is if you are a "life long" Republican that means you hold republican values. Who cares who actually represents the party as that changes every year/4 years. Its the base politics that should be your leverage of support.

Are you implying that you have throw your Republican beliefs and accepted Democrat policies. Or are you just saying you hate Trump so much it changed your party regardless of the policies.

I do NOT like Trump either, but I voted for him because I do not agree with Democrat Values or policies. (To be fair maybe one day we will find a middle ground I will never rule it out) But currently from Obama, to HRC, to Biden and for the life of me, Harris making decisions for the country. I personally see the road to ruin.

I am sadden as I had this discussion with another member, that I see this often, The Presidential election has denigrate to nothing more than American Idol. Votes for a person you like, rather then the substantive policies and actions that guide and lead our country. Trump is VERY polarizing... but the policies that he chose and enacted made sense. Obama, was NOT polarizing but well manner, charismatic and a Great example of how a person should act, But his policies were terrible.

The job of the POTUS is listed in the constitution section II, no where does it say they must be well spoken, charismatic, this is NOT a qualification of the Presidency. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE, but not a requirement.

OP I am sorry to see you go! I just hope you accept the policies to who you are choosing to now support.

Trump is a plutocrat, which means that he supports anything that will make him a buck. This is why he spent four years shamelessly catering to foreign interests and would sell off portions of America if nobody stopped him. He is a Republican today because only there can he find a radical base that would support his bad behavior, aggressive nature, and even treachery.

After all, ever notice how Republicans betray their own as "rinos" if they ever dare not put Party first, but the Democrats don't have a special insult towards Democrats who dare not step in line and have a differing perspective? This is why the left produces various characters and leans, whereas the right is largely just an echo chamber for the alt-Right anymore.

This edifies my point further though. The Repubs have their policies no? Trump could be the leader, McConnel, Paul Ryan whoever, The point is You can hate Trump, but the OP seems to imply the disdain they have, shifted their political beliefs?

That seems VERY odd to me. 2024 we "might" have another Republican Challenger? (we might not) But it wont be Trump forever. Yets do you or do you NOT agree on the political beliefs of the party. This then also proves peoples ignorance to vote on the person the "like" rather than the substantive policies that are the MOST important for choosing X political candidate no?

the OP seems to change his whole view purely on the disdain for Trump? disregard the view they seemed to have for "72" years?

I applaud your decision to jettison Trump and this cult he has going and vote Democrat in the Election. It's refreshing to see that at least one former Republican sees the truth. Yes, there are many other aspects to the party that are troubling besides Trump but I just wanted to acknowledge your change in support. Thank you.

In today's Democratic party, Biden is pretty hard on the right-hand scale. At least, for a Democrat.

i'm sure that the crook from the City is causing the Republicans with integrity to jump ship.

Trump if you recall had no platform for his reelection so I'm wondering which policies in particular you liked?

Honestly, I never thought I would live to see any party fight to destroy our right to vote.

But then one might need to reconcile that with the result of the popular vote. The Democratic turnout was the highest, I believe, in history.

Fact is, Trump is in court. So what?

Courts are where people bring their grievances. Indubitably you must believe those claims lack merit. Fine. But still, its a COURT ACTION taken consistent with procedural Due Process.

Trump isn't burning down the Reichstag here.

I voted straight democrat this past election and sent money to the dems only because of my disdain for the PIG Trump.

Ok, I mean I understand #NeverTrumpers, but remember there are #NeverDemocrats too.

If your conviction is that you want to hold your nose and vote Democrat, fine, but there are people who are willing to hold their nose and vote Trump because the Democrats are promising to engage in court packing and to impose taxation which make it increasingly likely that individuals will pay more than 50% of their income in taxes to local, state and the federal government.

because of the current tyrant in office.

But he lost, so now are you on board with the governments making the majority of economic decisions in the US? Are you ok with undermining separation of powers with court packing?

Again if you believe in these things, fine, but ultimately if you're a #NeverTrumper, your duty is DONE. In theory, now you should want the Republicans to retain the Senate on the basis that Biden served the purpose of checking Trump, but now the Republicans need to stop the Democrats from doing things that a conservative shouldn't want the Democrats to be able to do.

Unless of course you have had a genuine change of heart in which case then, you're just a Democrat.

I voted for Nixon, Ford. Reagan twice. Bush 41. Perot, then Dole. When I finally realized the national debt went up higher under Republicans I started to question what the hell I was doing. I voted for Bush 43, and then the light bulb came on when it was clear he and his minions lied about WMD. I then voted Kerry. Ron Paul and then Obama second term. In 2016 I abstained. How could anyone vote for either one of those idiots?

Now I have seen how my beloved country has been completely dismantled and destroyed by a snake oiled salesman/ conman. The dog shit pile Biden will try to clean up is just mind boggling. 290,000 dead Americans cry out from their graves to execute this guy.

i don't plan to vote for a Republican for at least ten years as a response to this ridiculous movement. they have lost their mother****ing minds.

Are you still under the delusion the R party is still about limited gov't and fiscally conservative?
They haven't been that, well, I can't remember a time they were that.

How is court packing such a horrible thing considering what Trump did with appointing ACB? What Trump did was extremely shady but well within the boundaries of the constitution. Packing the court is nothing more than sweet revenge by Democrats. Shady? Absolutely? Constitutional? You bet your ass it is.

Would not be surprised to see 4 liberal judges appointed by Biden. Who to blame? The ****king idiot that just got landslided out of office. That's who.

Honorable decision.
By the way, you do get to have conservative values as a Democrat.
For instance, I am a gun owner, I do support our military, I do fly the flag, I do go all USA-#1 in manufacturing and jobs, I do believe in making new arrivals pick up basic English if they intend to become residents here (and citizens) and I do mock political correctness as "the elevation of sensitivity over truth".

Talk to your fellow Dems and lefties.
I promise you're going to meet some who annoy the crap out of you but I also promise you will meet plenty who are thirsty for common ground and harmony.

Pete Buttlicker and BiDumb are not moderates. All DemonCRATS are hard Left whackjobs.

Its temporary revenge and long term its a demise of separation of powers.

The only reason you should even THINK about doing it is if you think the Republicans will NEVER EVER ****ING EVER win again or be in a position of 2016.

Of course if that is the case, then just be slightly patient.

AHAHAHA. No you can't. There are zero REAL Conservatives, and I mean pro-life anti homosexual marriage Conservatives in the Demon-rat party.
