Because Rush Limbaugh/Fox News.I've never worked in government but I've worked closely with all 3 levels of government in Canada, the US and China.
It mystifies me why government employees are regarded as less dedicated, hard working and effective as the private sector.
Government employees are just like the rest of us. They didn't suddenly all become sloths just because they work for a government department.
What's the size of DHS? Look it up yourself. 260,000 government employees. Now the third largest cabinet position, it was the product of Bush the Lesser, and his Republican congress. Did anybody vote against this new cabinet position and massive government expansion? Yeah - all Democrats.

Not one single Republican voted against it. Not one!

How about Trump's new Space Force. 14,000 strong and growing, including the brand new 8th seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and with every concomitant layer of military echelon beneath it. Lot's of promotions there, eh? And do you think expanding the US won't expand the government? Trump wants to retake the Panama Canal. Ask yourself, How? With a smaller government and smaller military? Trump has expressed a will to annex Canada, and acquire Greenland. How? With a smaller government? What about Trump Plaza Gaza! Your president's new golf course, spa, hotel and casino! How do you think that grand takeover scheme in a foreign land would shrink the government? Without shots being fired? Or without tens, or even hundreds-of-billion$ in payouts to neighboring Arab states? Hmm? Take a guess.
Seriously, how do you picture all of those EXPANSIONS happening ... with a smaller government?

Do you have to hand in time cards?This week I had to respond to an email from Pete Hegseth, our Secretary of Defense. The email requested that I provide 5 bullet points about what I accomplished in my DOD civilian job last week.
I found this completely demeaning to everyone who is serving our country. I served this nation for over 20 years in the US Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant and I now work for the Department of Defense. Meanwhile, our Secretary of Defense never commanded a unit greater than a Company, but is serving as Trump and Musk's lap dog.
I realize that this is nothing but political theater, since many Trump supporters literally hate government workers, but the vast majority of government workers work hard and serve this nation, but also need their job to provide for themselves and their families. Pay for government workers is less than 3% of the budget. I really worry about these people, who are affected by this garbage.
Fortunately I don't need the job. I tried the retirement thing, but got bored and went back to work. So, in case anyone reads them, which I doubt, my 5 bullet comments were:

The format is absurd as it assumes 5 tasks can be accomplished in a week some tasks take a long time. The mechanic who services the engines on air force one do you think he does 5 engines in a week
it is also absurd because due to the number of govt workers there is little to no chance of all these emails actually being read and verified. Ie somone can make up 5 any 5 things but since there is no real way to verify this what is the use?

I've never had a problem responding to my boss, either in the Army, the civilian sector or as a DOD civilian. What I have a problem with is writing a meaningless email to someone who isn't in my chain of command, doesn't know what I do, won't read it and is having me do this as a pretext to potentially firing me.And did you have to submit streps and after action reports?
