My side suggests if Lanza had only ten rounds that there might have been less casualties, but shoots down idea of arming ex military/police ignoring same possibility that had there been a trained individual with a weapon there also might have been less casualties. I want your thoughts fellow lefties. :]

I can reload and be back on target before the magazine hits the ground, and I dont practice or shoot a whole lot anymore. It might save a second, but short mags are more reliable and easier to handle I think. I don't think 10 round mags or 20 rounds would make a dang bit of difference. All responsible adults should be armed.

Well Lanza isn't a marine but you see my point? I say require background checks at gun shows and arm ex military/police at schools. These things should be no brainers.

You're advocating for arming police? Aren't they already (I may be misundertanding your point)? I agree with arming ex-military but that's because I believe in everyone's right (subject to some limitations, as all rights are) to have guns.

Arming ex police that are working in schools.

Necessity vs. Risk.

When someone invades your home, how many bullets will you want. Will you be "shaky" from adrenaline and waking up in a panic, absolutely!

Statistically evaluate how many people are actually going to invade your home. This of course can change with time. Right now I don't see more than 3 people in a team entering my home.

Balance this with "What should every American be allowed to own in a shoulder to shoulder crowd of hundreds of people."

Mag limitation size COULD be a deep topic if people were allowed to talk about it. The problem is there are people in the Country and in politics that think, "As long as I'm safe to own it it should be legal". The basics of Liberty or Libertarians. They don't have the ability to think about anyone but themselves. Because everyone is innocent in America and ignore the carnage :wow:

I advocate letting any qualified school employee who trains, prepares, and volunteers to simply carry at their place of work.

And by the way I can still shoot 18 rnds in less then 30 seconds on 6 different targets with a revolver. I haven't timed it lately, it might be 20 seconds with the speed loaders ... Going to ban those too?

What kind of extremist would agree with that? (sarcasm)

I would agree with that if we lived in a society where screening people was necessary. But we have a new movement of Libertarians who think that teachers shouldn't require background checks, innocent until proven guilty.

So where do we go from there?

That line of thinking leads to a dead end.

Right but the power for that limitations belong to the states not the federal government.

Well, I'm not on the left but I can give you a few opinions. I don't know if Lanza necessarily could have been stopped by an armed response but then again no one can, it's definitely an x variable, something tells me he probably would have killed himself anyway in the presence of a weapon because he did so when officers arrived but it's going to be forever speculation. Mag swaps are fairly easy, and as has been stated short magazines tend to be more reliable, if magazines are in a readily accessible position a reload is a 1 to 2 second process. I think allowing people with CCW training or having trained personnel like retired military/police is a fine idea, preferably armed school employee CCW holders because they are already on payroll but that's just my opinion.

My last thought is something more difficult, we need to bolster mental health services but that is only as good as our ability as responsible citizens to report things we notice that seem dangerous, like violent behaviors, and red flags leading us to believe that individuals are a threat to themselves or others.

Our mental health services are practically non existent.

Yep, and that needs fixing fast. We have people who through no fault of their own are dangerous, we can't incarcerate them obviously because they are insane, not guilty, but they need help. You certainly won't get an argument from me that we do need to help them.

Without a doubt. It doesn't seem like anyone in the senate or congress has any ideas unfortunately.

This is one thing all sides should iron out. It's pretty simple, dangerous but guiltless people need help, they may not know they need help but that's the time when we step up for them and ultimately ourselves. Sure, we have some national financial problems right now but we can shift some money around for things that are important.

Yeah, expect the worst hope for the best. Maybe they'll do something instead of justing talking about it.

This seems to be the thing right, left, libertarian, and everyone in between actually agrees on. Might as well rip off the band-aid and do this.

Well I can imagine each side taking issue with each others legislation. Other than that this should be actually policy instead of just a talking point.

Agree in full.

Point is mag size is irrelevant to the problem and you do not have to be a 'marine' to quickly change magazines. In Lanza's situation a one-armed person would have the same outcome facing pre-teens.

I was making that point but thanks for making it again.

Paranoia and Control

These are your watchwords, driven by your fear of everything, and your disdain for individual rights.

Feel free to slink away quickly with your communist manifesto of personal control.

The last time I looked the libertarians got .007% of the vote. Or something ridiculous like that; I'm no fan of libertarian points of view. Sadly I'm jaded by the extremist among them which advocate more anarchy then anything else.
