How would you rate Trump's speech

I know, no one does special snowflake like Trump. He is the hands down world champion of the world at being triggered.

I said in Nov that I was hoping TRUMP was the second coming of FDR, he is looking good so far.

I suppose he is rich and has a...cough...distinctive look to him. That's about all I am seeing from the comparison.

Probably not. It is just a speech after all.

It's his actions moving forward that really matter in the end.

There was one extremely disturbing aspect of it that shows the degree of personal damage Trump is suffering from when he tried to absolve himself of the responsibility of the death of the serviceman Ryan Owens and played to his widow like he did. He pretended that it was not his mission and it was at the same time wildly successful. This I found beyond disgusting and a sign of the complete mentally ill narcissist he is.

Once upon a time we had a President who believed that THE BUCK STOPPED HERE. That was Truman. We had John Kennedy who did indeed inherent much of the plan for a Cuban invasion and gave his okay to it and when it crashed and burned he accepted public responsibility for it even though it had its origins with the previous administration.

But Trump being the supreme narcissist he is has to both rationalize that it was not his fault while trying to pretend it was some heroic and glorious success. Its like he has dissociative disorder and flips from one side to the other in the space of a single paragraph.

This man is truly mentally disturbed.

Would you be surprised if I said I'd rate it a ten? Excellent. His best.

He's come a,long way, imo. I gather he's using a teleprompter... I didn't cringe once. ;)

It will be disheartening to see how liberals tear it apart.
I thought it was his best speech and it was good to see him bite his tongue on the nasty divisive rhetoric he is so well known for.

I am waiting to see actual plans for his big ideas.

I have been an ICU RN for almost 35 years, and I have needed to care for my mother and brother with serious health care issues.....on top of that I have a son that may be difficult to insure in the next few years.

So of course I want to know what his actual health care plans are. There is nothing I am seeing that seems like there are any genuine plans that have a chance of giving decent coverage . I guess we are supposed to see something more concrete in March, so I will take a deep breath and wait.

The good:

  • Edit: adding this to the top, cuz it was the best part: his opening the speech condemning anti-semitic attacks. It was the right thing to do, and the right placement of it.
  • Sounded presidential
  • While I admit to channel flipping, I did not hear any whining about the media
  • I am a big supporter of family leave, glad he considers it important
  • Most sane he has sounded

The bad:
  • too long
  • Really, VOICE? On the list of things that should matter, that is not even on it
  • Really, School choice is todays civil rights? Is he on ****ing drugs?
  • Sooner or later, he is going to have to actually give details. Today aparently was not the day.
  • Outside of family leave, nothing I had any use for program wise.

Overall, I would give it a C- at best, and largely because he usually does much worse.

I think this is pretty spot on.
Way better for "him"
Not really anything good for a president, to much me me me, lack of details and ultra ultra dramatics (yes the civil rights line was terrible) and i'm guessing the fact checkers were lighting up like Christmas tress with mostly false and pants on fire.

No. I don't see it that way at all. The point is that the crimes of those who are here illegally could be prevented if they weren't here. It's not at all about the relative value of any victim.

exactly

there are many ways to combat home grown criminals and what works for some (less poverty) might not work for others (who might be insane but not poor like Ted Bundy)

however, what will clearly work with illegals causing crimes is keeping them out in the first place

A lot of conservatives have simply given up on public education policy as a discussion point. I think the Fordham Institute kind of lost its appetite for reform after fellow conservatives were telling them that they are bad people for liking Common Core, which is basically like eating one buffalo wing in an appetizer and then saying, "I'm full, you guys!" and walking out of the restaurant. A lot of conservatives have pussed out.

so far, no one who has stated they voted for Trump has given him bad marks and at least one or two who did not, rated his speech well. all those who rated it average or bad i believe are on record as voting against Trump

that's very interesting

Did you watch the speech yourself?

we really don't care what a non citizen non voter thinks. I should have requested this be limited to people who actually are citizens of the USA. we get the fact that you are going to be upset with anything Trump says but then again, the more upset leftwing foreigners are with Trump, the better I like him

Speak for yourself.

Public education, no matter what happens, is where most kids will get their education. To not discuss it and work to improve it is about as bad a thing as you can do. But that does not even begin to cover how stupid his education "choice" as civil right is, when people do have the option to attend private schools, or homeschool, and nothing Trump or republicans is proposing is going to significantly change the number of students attending private or home school. Betsy Devos is pretty well known around Western Michigan(my native area) as a ****ing idiot, and it certainly seems like her brand of stupid is catching...

We are giving up on universal public education, it is fantastically expensive and they can never get their act together.

Which means than a large portion of the population gets no education. How well do you think that is going to work?

I agree Maggie. It was by far his best speech ever, and I honestly can't recall anybody doing it better before a joint session of Congress.

My life has to get awfully boring to spend whatever time his speech lasted watching it. Same goes for all politicians.

I speed read the text in about five minutes.

President Trump's Address To Congress: Key Highlights And Full Text | Zero Hedge

My thoughts?

Blah, blah, blah.

Man, whomever wrote this thing really thinks most Americans have IQ's in the double digits. Pointing out this person in the crowd and that person in the crowd. Yeah - I am sure the ignorant masses ate it up. Looks like a cheap magic show to me.
And quoting from history? Another nonsensical trick that impresses the weak/ignorant.

When you get past all that nonsense, he had some good points. The Middle Eastern waste was a great point. And his 'Free nations are the best vehicle for expressing the will of the people –- and America respects the right of all nations to chart their own path.' part was also great. Lower taxes is great also.

But then he says one stupid thing after another...a trillion for infrastructure (from where? Let the cities/states fix their own bridges), the war on drugs nonsense, destroy ISIS (not possible, btw - not with the military) and his immigration obsession continues.
If he had stopped there -it would have been no stupider than any other POTUS speech.

But then he gets into his two idiocies - military spending increase (not sure if he said it tonight - but he will) and protectionism.

Anyone who thinks that American sovereignty is in danger and requires more money on defense is a military moron/ignoramus of the first magnitude. America outspends the next 12 highest military spending countries on the planet...and he says the military needs 'rebuilding'? What a complete load of neocon ****.
And protectionism is total moron stuff. Any economist worth a penny knows that. All it does is raise prices...it has NEVER worked.

What he also failed to mention is his plans will undoubtedly send the deficit into the stratosphere...or close to it. You cannot lower taxes and increase spending and not have a budget deficit increase (assuming you already have a budget deficit).

He was more inclusive...which will impress Trumpbots and the politically ignorant.

Big deal - it was obvious someone else wrote it for him and the first time he goes off copy, the old, angry, spoiled, Trump bile will come spewing out again.

I had always been a big public education guy, till we ran into bad schools and I ended up homeschooling a lot of years. Now I am exhausted by the decades of failed reforms and the super high costs and the pretty crap results. My kids just got through schools not that long ago, I spent a fair amount of time in schools, and I did not like what I saw, what I felt. These assholes need a kick in the ass.

Quite right. That's why I, a foreigner, have not voted in the poll. Although I am allowed to say that I liked his pro-NATO words.
