How many laptops do you go through every 4 years?

Zero... I have a 8-9 year old Acer... They don't update it/support it anymore... But it still works great, battery still holds a good charge..

Plays video flawlessly... On 2.4 wifi... It doesn't support 5.8 G..

So I'll use it until it dies...

Proof please. You have a long history of exaggerating Apple's mistakes and glorifying Windows so please prove this.
Proof? Let me ask you this.. how often does Apple update MacOS? Once a month? Once every 3 months? I in now way glorify windows... There are plenty of issues with Windows.

Proof please. You have a long history of exaggerating Apple's mistakes and glorifying Windows so please prove this.

MacOS is nr 7... ahead of any Windows based system.

Proof please.
Yea yea was over exaggerating shit.. the amount of different distros makes it hard to patch. Plus no one uses Linux.

Which flaw was this one? The one discovered by the Project Zero team? If that's the one, then your facts are way over-exaggerated yet again.
Exactly which one.. there have been a few. I am talking about the flaw that Google got fined for exploiting. It was a known issue for years, and Apple did nothing about it. Or the famous SSL bug.. that shit was hilarious, but dangerous as hell.

And remember I use both systems - same happens both ways but it's always funny how you always exaggerate the negative for Apple.
Only way I can get a Windows machine to take as long as Apple for a reinstall is if I dig out an old 10 year old machine with an old timer harddrive. I use both as well, and for installation Windows is by far faster on modern hardware... that is my experience. Even the M1 MacBook Air I had to update last week took ages for some reason.

Hoo boy.

They "suck so bad" the iPad became the biggest selling tablet for the last 10 years and iPhones regenerated the whole mobile phone market by creating the smartphone to become a trillion dollar company?
So what? Does not change that their various OS have issues.. The iPad is the best selling.. sure, but since no one actually buys iPads anymore other than 60+ year olds, so not sure how relevant that is anymore. Does Apple even have iPads separate in their earnings report anymore? Plus iPadOS is... buggy and frustrating. But I do love the design of the iPad Pros... just wished that such a powerful machine ran an OS that was not designed for toddler video consumption.

Also, Apple did NOT CREATE the smartphone! Taking it mainstream sure, but inventing? hell no. You should know better.

There is no doubt that marketing by Apple has created a cult of people, that believe things like iPhones are more secure, easier to use and all that crap. Sure, maybe 10+ years ago.. but now? hell no. Even the myth their cameras are the best has been debunked year after year by blind independent tests, but people still believe it!

If it's purely for normal business uses I don't see any point in upgrading as that machine has more than enough power to do everything you need.

I can understand upgrading if you have a job like graphic designer, architect or are a power gamer but other than that computers from 10 years ago managed just fine for most business tasks.

Im retired... So I use it mostly outside or traveling... So yeah, it works fine for my needs..

Pretty much all you'll gain from upgrading is a nicer screen as I doubt you'll use 99% of the extra features and power anyway as most people tend to just stick with using the programs they know and like.

Even if you are retired, don't you feel the need to have 'nice' things? I am 40, so I still have 25 years of work, and, if I can, I will want to work until I am 75. I also, am kinda screwed, because I bought a condo for much more than what is worth today. Am upset over that.

Lol.. No... But I do have a very good phone, and a very nice Windows 11 PC.. And a pretty good tablet...

My laptop? I don't use it as much as I use to... So I'm ok with my old Acer... Lol

BTW retire before you're 75..you'll love retirement...

Strange. I guess different individuals have different expectations of what they want out of life. I don't believe I will ever retire, with advances in automation, etc, I plan to keep working above 75-if possible. I can't see myself enjoying retirement as I hate downtime now and I am still 'young'.

I thought that too... But after about 4 months of retirement, and not answering to an alarm clock or a boss... I never went back to work... I loved it.. But as u said every one is different..

Yes... I asked first. Proof please.

Let me ask you this.. how often does Apple update MacOS? Once a month? Once every 3 months?

Once every 3 months for security patches and once a year for the OS now.

MacOS is nr 7... ahead of any Windows based system.

By 70... you are certainly reaching. Android has 6000+ vulnerabilities and Mac OS has 3181 compared to 3162 for Windows Server and 3070 on Windows 10.

Do you remember how I said "over-exaggerate?" - well there's your proof.

Plus no one uses Linux.

nobody uses Linux you said 3 posts ago and then you must have noticed Debian Linux at the top of your nice little list with vulnerabilities by 8000 listed vulnerabilities.

Exactly which one.. there have been a few. I am talking about the flaw that Google got fined for exploiting. It was a known issue for years, and Apple did nothing about it. Or the famous SSL bug.. that shit was hilarious, but dangerous as hell.

No, I want the one you claimed. You are going into Gish Gallop mode again.

From Windows own website - "Most devices will take about an hour to upgrade as soon as the download is completed. Although older devices could take longer, some newer, high-performance devices might upgrade faster."

From an independent website - "Let the Computer Complete the Install Process (Less than 30 min.)

Since you are updating the macOS, the Apple logo or progress bar might persist for much longer than usual. As installation continues, the progress bar might move slowly and pause for long periods. That's why Apple recommends beginning macOS installation in the evening—so that it can complete overnight, if needed."

So what? Does not change that their various OS have issues.. The iPad is the best selling.. sure, but since no one actually buys iPads anymore other than 60+ year olds,

Gish Gallop. Plenty of artists and illustrators buy the iPad Pro but you are claiming 162.3 million iPads were mainly sold to 60+ year olds in 2022? How do you know? Because YOU bought one?

my desktop is a 12 year old Acer, works fine but has been upgraded all its life. i prefer a big screen when working and tons of storage space inside of a tower.

we have about 5 laptops and they just don't break, recently i got into upgrading those too. Dell laptops are very easy to work on, especially the business types which i get for a song.

Dell refurbs older laptops and marks them way down, then every week they mark them down about 50% again. so you may be getting an older $1000 machine for between 100 and 200 bucks. if the battery is weak below 80% life they send another one to you; everything is free ship.

sometimes i am tempted to get a Workstation pc but i think that would probably be over kill, but they look like fun to run and repair.

I was doing some research and I found out I go thru 2 different laptops every two years with each one costing me about 2,500usd. Man, I just had to buy another laptop today for that amount after, the one that I am using, has only lasted me for 3 years.

How many laptops do you go thru?
I own a computer repair shop. What do you do with your laptops? I get plenty that are 5 years or older that might need a new ram chip or a screen or keyboard but they can be fixed for much less than replacing. I get older laptops with a conventional hard drive that can be upgraded to a SSD drive and the machine now boots up in less than half the time and performs much better. A lot of businesses have a model of replacing laptops every four years. For a more casual user they can get those laptops for pennies on the dollar and they are usually in excellent shape.

Mine is 9 years old.

I now own a MS Surface Laptop.. Best laptop I have ever owned. And it's not remotely close. The build quality is rock solid. Dell, Lenovo, HP and others pale in comparison. Before you consider another LT, I highly recommend you test drive a Surface. I absolutely love mine.

I rarely buy new computers. I tend to use mine til they almost wear out and how easy it is to break a laptop completely turned

4 years typically just one. I had real bad luck witha Microsoft ProBook sorry I only got 2 years out of it the battery is swelled up and pushed the screen out and all sorts of stupid stuff. And this of course started being a problem right after the end warranty ended and Microsoft wanted more than what the laptop was worth to fix it. So the one I replaced it with was an HP so far so good.

it's a shame that batteries are still an issue with laptops. if memory serves, we are not to overcharge laptops beyond about 95%, so unplug when not in use.

some laptops will shut off charging before 100%, you have to go in the software to do it, if not just pull the plug on the thing to not over charge.

does anyone know of third party software to take care of this issue?

1.) what type of laptops?
2.) what are you leaving out of the story because this seems crazy

I use a laptop for work that i bring home every day, i do a ton of different things on it and run multiple screens with it etc etc and I have never had one die so fast.
Sometimes i upgrade the memory. One time i replaced its fan (less than 30$) and one time I repasted one, also less than 20 bucks.

The current one im using ive had for like 5 years but will probably upgrade soon, just because (we have new laptops just sitting in boxes) not cause its needed

this seems typical around my company and others use their laptops even harder than i do, the mechanical engineers and board designers. (im an electronic engineer)

great. is over charging laptops an issue that i read about? best to keep them unplugged?

thanks.

for a normal dependable laptop, if this is an issue it would only be an issue to battery life not the laptop itself.

the vast majority of time my laptop is plugged in. its not plugged in for a couple hours here and there when i have it on the porch with me or in the garage so in my personal experience I really dont notice battery performance or degradation

my son uses his laptop all day leaving it on and plugged in; basically using it as a Desktop. i tested the battery life left and it was 100% after 5 years; at night he turns the power off to the thing.

so i know this works, normally i don't leave rechargeable batteries on a charger; when they are done they go off the charger.

No it was a battery is sue it wasn't because I overcharged it I didn't do that. They release gas and when they release gas they puff up because they're sealed.

What the heck are you doing to your laptops?

I had a 2013 MacBook that lasted me until 2020 and in 2018, I bought an HP zbook g2 X4 that is still going strong - I still use it daily for production work at the emergency service dept I work for. (The fire service laptops are cheap nasty HP Probooks that fall over if I try to open more than 3 large PowerPoint's on them)
Same here. I buy very affordable, under 1K laptops and I would think I maybe replace them every 5 to 6 years. Granted, I don't do any gaming or run any demanding apps on my laptop.

This is the best idea. Most chargers these days have automatic turn off when fully charged so as not to over charge the battery. So that fear should be put to bed. The reason why leaving one of these smart devices plugged in reduces battery life it's because after it's fully charged it will lose 1% of the battery and it will start charging again to 100%. And it will do this over and over and over again and those are charging cycles and that takes away from the life of the battery. Sometimes these happen as many as 20 times a minute.

So it's good to unplug them when they're fully charged.
