How Do We End

What's more likely to destroy society and the world as we know it?

Maybe "we" wouldn't. A rogue human or rogue group of humans might do it surreptitiously.

I think what I am driving at is that, just as we can destroy ourselves with nukes, we can destroy ourselves with AI. Does that pin it on the AI? I suppose not.

Come on
If nukes are not on line how does AI achieve this?

Not really. The world wide everybody connected aspect might alter or decline but people will just fall back into smaller societies after a mass die off.
There may not be a single extinction-level event but civilization, as a whole, would be dialed back to the brutal frontier days. We are not the hardy generations before us that were well-versed in harsh environments with no mechanical means.

A combination. Important to understand that all of the above are likely the result of human industrial activity. The collapse occurs at a time when we think that we are at the peak of human existence, when we maximize technological advancement and assume that efficiency can solve any problem. That's why they call it collapse, because the next 10-40 years are radically, and tragically, different from the previous 50, 100, 200, 500 years. See Rome. See Meso-America. But this is so, so, so much worse. This is on a global scale. We have absolutely no ****ing clue what's about to hit us, but it's going to be totally devastating.
If A.I. advances much more, short-sighted, greedy companies will replace workers with tech, who in turn won't have jobs to pay for their products and services, causing a financial collapse. Many roads to failure here.

In conventional economic terms, the problem with technology isn't that it increases efficiency; it's that gains in efficiency don't benefit labor. Not sure that it leads to financial collapse, but it does lead to a lot of displacement.

Our economy is like our supply chain, always teetering on the brink. Massive disruptions could set off a chain reaction of unforeseeable events that we might never fully recover from. Especially, if the elite and leaders are insulated by their wealth, influence, and power from the effects.

If Rick Grimes and his crew can figure it out then we could as well...

Fire and Ice

Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

All of the above but will not happen in my lifetime

They are online. Check out Russia.

So, I guess the question still stands.

Why do such simple things to understand always leave your posts befuddled?

Honest. Maybe just take them offline?

Good God.

Please don't reply.
This is a constant with you.

Omfg

Honest, stay away from the TV

You rudeness and immaturity are so bizarre. This is a discussion thread. Discuss or leave.

What does this have to do with anything?

A brown dwarf enters the solar system and sends the earth into the sun.

Just finished. Good story.

Larry Niven's "Lucifers Hammer" also a good read.

Other.............

I'm convinced that a large meteor will hit the earth and destroy it. We're going to try to shoot it down but we're going to ultimately fail.
I don't think we'd even notice until near before deep impact. Where's Bruce Willis when you need him, lol

Trump. Trump will end all life as we know it. Orangeman bad!!!
He'll "truth" that he actually did nuke that hurricane, Russia and China will go check their satellite surveillance again and find out he's right this time, so they'll decide to pre-emptively strike Mar-A-Lago with a nuke to prevent that crazy bastard from ever being president again.
But he was away pretending to bang a porn star in Nevada and they missed, so he survives in an old nuclear bunker near there while the world is wiped out by the nuclear exchange that ends it.

Trump survives of course.

I don’t th
What aspect of that scenario do you find implausible? Are you skeptical that the technology will exist (or already exists), or are you skeptical that AI would ever want to do such a thing?
ink people realize it wouldn’t need to be enough AI to pass the Turing test, require consideration of it’s rights, etc.

But running away with its instructions and having control of the wrong systems could **** things up good.

Even if it doesn’t thinks therefore it is.

AI, seriously?
Let's hear this reasoning.
I put this very question to an AI program. I did not provide the possible choices, just the question:

What's more likely to destroy society and the world as we know it?

Here is the AI program's response, which it provided in about 5 seconds:

There are many potential threats that could potentially destroy society and the world as we know it, including:
  • Climate change and its associated effects, such as rising sea levels, more severe storms, and droughts
  • Pandemics, which have the potential to spread rapidly and cause widespread illness and death
  • Nuclear war, which could lead to devastating loss of life and long-term environmental damage
  • Cyberattacks, which could disrupt critical infrastructure and cripple economies
  • Artificial intelligence, if not developed and managed responsibly, could lead to catastrophic consequences
It's difficult to say which of these threats is the most likely to occur, as it depends on a variety of factors and the actions taken to mitigate them. It's important for individuals, organizations, and governments to be aware of these potential threats and take steps to reduce the likelihood and impact of them.
Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but not stupid either!
