How come the evil socialist government-run security force known as the U.S. Military is somehow magically not Socialism?
It's government-run.
It's entirely controlled by one commander and chief who directs all of its decisions.
There's no private competition of any kind allowed in America.

Kinda seems like socialism to me.

The thing is, socialism isn't bad, by default.

The disagreements are over what should be socialized and what not.

Not according to those who hate Socialism. In their own words "Socialism Doesn't Work, it Always Leads to Disaster."

Socialism is like Capitalism - Applied in the wrong area or in the wrong way, it causes problems.

Clearly you do not know what Socialism is.

Hello!!!!!!!!!!! Of course the military is socialism. I have spoken to this for years here.
Regardless of how many times you spoken of it, you are still wrong.
The military is not socialism.

Like the individual "right" of self defense, the military is a natural product of a society's "right" to protect itself, and was in existence long before Socialism was ever developed as political and economic theory.
So no it is not Socialism.

I don't think any of you actually understand exactly what socialism is, or its benefits for humanity!
But you do know, if you don't conform to the ruling classes demands, which makes to debt slaves, but slave all the same!

Well you surely haven't pointed out any benefit "for humanity".

Want to see successful Socialism in action? Google and/or utube Broderhof. If you can live and believe that way, then Socialism is for you. When the whole world can live and believe that way, Socialism will work for everyone.

We, on the other hand, live way beyond merely "keeping up with the Jones"; we now live a "Branded" upscale culture. Quit kidding yourselves that we're ready for real Socialism.

Who here thinks "from those who can, to those who need"? Sure, we'll give small portion of our wealth to others, but egalitarian we are not.

No, we're not cut out for Socialism, not by a long shot. Hypocrites.

PS> The military is an oligarchy. Hopefully based on merit. Far from egalitarian. Far from Socialist.

PS> This has got to be one of the worst polls I've seen on this forum. Obviously not meant to be taken seriously.

Clearly you do not know what Socialism is.
You clearly didn't read your own definition.

The government does, in fact, own the means of production and distribution of goods, in this case, the "goods" are defense forces. The government alone trains soldiers and decides what munitions and machinery to put into production. The Commander and Chief alone directs the distribution of our defense forces. There are no private alternatives I can choose if I decide I don't like the job that the U.S. Military is doing.

This is absolutely no different than if there was one and only one car company in the United States owned by the Government where the government made all decisions about what types of automobiles to produce and then distributed those automobiles to the people based on who they thought needed them.

In fact, most of the early bad versions of socialism were born out of situations where a military coup removed a government and installed itself or its leader as a supreme dictator. That dictator then took over all aspects of the society and directed it in a military-style hierarchy of giving orders. Their original beliefs were that a military-style system of handing down orders would be more efficient and more productive than a bunch of bickering bureaucrats each with their own personal agenda. Why do you think every photo you've ever seen of Fidel Castro has him wearing Military fatigues? Look at photos of Stalin and most of the historical leaders of China, you almost always see them pictured in some kind of Military Style uniform presented as if they are a general with medals on their uniform. Why do you think Military Parades are so common in these totalitarian dictatorships like North Korea, China, and Russia?

The whole entire premise from which socialism was originally undertaken was the idea that the Military that was trained to serve the people and risk their lives for the people were more beloved by the people and therefore would be a better fit to rule over the people. They would overthrow whatever government and leaders were in place and install a military-style dictatorship in which the military would personally make sure that the people were fed and looked after.

That is exactly what socialism is. At the very least that's what old school socialism was. The type that leads to so many problems.

Wrong.
You are engaged in some mighty delusional thinking.

Ive never seen so many mindless advocates OF socialism spew such ridiculous mindless drivel ABOUT socialism demonstrating they literally dont have a clue about any of this that they are talking about.

Agreed!

Sometimes around here it feels like when a child wanders into the room and interrupts adults who are having a conversation.

Are you open to anything but the capitalist system? I think not, the biggest nose at the trough, the bullying of privilege, and slavery is not for me, I believe in actual freedom!

Regardless of your rhetoric, you still haven't pointed out any benefit "for humanity".

Socialism was "developed" in the same sense that capitalism was "developed." These theories do nothing more than describe the way human societies operate. They are not proscriptive, they are descriptive. There were socialist societies and capitalist societies long before the theories were developed. And some militaries are capitalist systems. The US military is almost entirely a socialist system, because it is owned and operated by the U.S. government with little to no room for private enterprise.

U.S. law enforcement is also socialist, incidentally. There is nothing capitalist about either of these institutions.

What's your opinion of socialism? I did live in a socialist country until thatcher was elected, then we went extreme! Every tax payers asset stolen, sold off, to friends, promises broken, and usury which was illegal, became the norm!

That's because you don't read my replies!
I had a friend who met Fidel Castro and his brother Raol a number of years ago! And still he had to change his sleeping arrangements in case the CIA or FBI tried to assassinate either!
I'm a humanist, I gave the dictionary meaning and what it represents! Any extremism is wrong the left or right! You don't give nations democracy, that's called genocide, when you use bombs, Aircraft, tanks, ships missiles and soldiers! Libya, Sudan Iraq, Syria, Yemen.
