After just two minutes of floor debate late Tuesday evening, the House passed a measure to prohibit the display of Confederate flags on graves in federal cemeteries.Despite the lack of fanfare, the vote marked the House's first entry into the debate over removing the Confederate flag from federal property that went beyond codifying already established policies.
Rep. Jared Huffman's (D-Calif.) amendment to the 2016 Interior Department spending bill seeks to end a policy that allows a temporary display of the flag in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. It sailed through on a voice vote after minimal discussion on the House floor that encountered no opposition.

The final vote on the Interior bill is expected on Thursday.

Woah! Definitely did not see that coming, and the amendment passed with no opposition!? Pretty unexpected, in my opinion. The times they are ye changin?

I take it all back, we are making a huge mistake with all these Confederate Flag bans. Over a state capital building, ok I get it. But removing them from burial grounds is asking for trouble. Trying to rid our history of everything Confederate is asking for trouble.

What is next? Rewrite history?

People that cry racism today will still cry racism tomorrow even after all the flags are gone.

Don't they have more ****ing important things to be voting on?

Yeah who cares about 9 black people getting slaughtered inside the U.S.; lets instead have daily hearings for years on 4 dead Americans abroad.

I missed the part where I said anything about black people getting slaughtered or hearings on dead Americans abroad. Or what they have to do with what I posted for that matter. Do you think this vote means no more blacks will get slaughtered in the US and no more Americans will die while abroad?

I missed the part where the Confederate Flag was responsible for the slaughter.

Good!

Now if we could get the conservatives to understand that yes, the formation of the Confederacy and the Civil War WERE about slavery instead of them trying to rewrite history to downplay slavery and Jim Crow, we might have some real change in America!

I hear crazy people kill people because of inanimate objects. It's probabaly not because of mental illness or anything, nope. Liberals just know so much about this stuff.

So the culture all of a sudden went away?

Certain patterns on cloth is a huge problem. We need to ban government from flying cloth with certain patterns on it. It's really not a cry baby issue. Really its not.

It's weird watching people argue that the US government should honor another government who tried to destroy its union.

You mean leave peacefully to only have to deal with an unreasonable president that refused to move his miltary personal out of their territory.

Get over it. The Civil war ended a century and a half a go. If you want to reminisce about almost 3 quarters of a million soldiers dead, close relatives fighting on opposite sides, and when slavery was legal, that's your problem not mine. Personally I'm glad that chapter in America's history is over.

Nope, I meant tried to destroy the union because they didn't like the whole phasing out slavery thing. Now run along, we've no time for your silly arguments.

So did slavery.

Which they only did because your president thought it was a great idea to have his personal in their terrority against the wishes of the south. It's funny the south gets blamed for attacking the fort when everyone was telling Lincoln to back down and get his men back north.

A grave should have whatever the hell the deceased or the family of the deceased WANTS on it, within reason.

PERIOD.

END THREAD.

I agree with taking the defeated flag down from the capitol of the state within the country that WON the war.

But now we're talking about the rights of the dead. Totally different matter.

He is your president too.*

thought it was a great idea to have his personal in their terrority against the wishes of the south.

I think you mean personnel and the wishes of the South were irrelevant. Buchanan was under absolutely no obligation to acquiesce to the wishes of the bunch of rich slave owners who drove the calls of secession to protect the institution of slavery.

It's funny the south gets blamed for attacking the fort when everyone was telling Lincoln to back down and get his men back north.

The South gets blamed because it fired the first shot. It then got its ass kicked quite thoroughly. So much so that all its defenders have today is whining because it didn't win. Tough nut.
