During the House debate on Iraq, Don Young (R-Makeupfacts) stated that those who dissented in the Iraq war should be executed. Yes, he really said that, and moreover, he used comments by Abraham Lincoln to back up his assertion. The problem is that Abraham Lincoln never made the comments. So where did the comments attributed to Lincoln come from? Insight Magazine, the sister publication of the Moonie-owned Washington Times.

Looks like Don Young would be a paragon of virtue in government - The one Stalin had, back in the Soviet Empire days.

Article is here.

And no, Kenny said, Young was "not advocating the hanging of Democrats."

Well, Young said one thing, and Kenny said Young didn't say it. But he did.

Young is the type who would undermine the Constitution if he could and make everybody shut up about the things they disagree with him on. Even if Lincoln had said it, which he did not, Young would still be a fool and an *** for quoting it.

I think the resolution is useless, a waste of time, but I guess its not illegal.

First, if you want to get technical about it, the quote doesn't even say they should be executed:

"Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged,"

Secondly, believing in the sentiment of a quote and repeating it doesn't mean that you wholeheartedly endorse the most extreme execution of it. Remember the fiasco over the Pope's comments in Turkey?

Though I wholeheartedly agree with you, I can certainly see why people may start raising eyebrows at the reference of such rhetoric.

Oh, yea, the guy sounds like a blowhard, but I'm just saying let's not make more of it than it is. It's this type of reaction in the media and by the public that CAUSES people like this to make comments in order to stir controversy. If everyone had a subdued reaction, people wouldn't be as rewarded for their spotlight seeking behavior.

No doubt, but I don't see a huge shift in social behavior that will stop reaction to this kind of rhetoric. It is much more efficient to hold the individual, especially being a public figure, responsible for poor taste than it is to try to stop the public from reacting. I just think public officials place themselves in a position that requires them to act and speak more responsibly.

Didn't the Republican Party do the exact same with Kerry's apparant "all the military are dumbasses" comment?? Blow it out of proportion?

I wasn't singling out executed. Any of Young's 3 choices is stupid, the whole statement is irresponsible and clownish.

I doubt he really meant it. He just shouldn't have repeated it, regardless of who he thought said it.
